Need web hosting rec

Can anyone recommend an affordable web hosting service?  Not for a blog (like blogspot, wordpress, etc.) but for an actual website.

Re: Need web hosting rec

  • I searched around a lot and ended up on dreamhost.com. Their self-service management panel is awesome, but they don't cripple you - you get full shell access as well. It's around $10/mo or so. Sometimes they have big deals though - when I first signed up I got a full year for $10.

  • BTW they have a lot of programming languages you might want... e.g. PHP & ruby & python... I've yet to find an app that they didn't have the dependencies for already installed. I've done custom drupal installations, mediawiki, tracks, as well as a bunch of more obscure app installations as well on dreamhost, no issues.

  • godaddy.com is also a good one.

  • Another vote for Dreamhost.  I've been using them for five years, and am very happy.  They're quite affordable, I have tons of web space and bandwidth, and they offer a decent amount of flexibility and control for a hosted site.

They also have a good referral program, so you can save $50 off a new one-year plan with a referral (my referral promo code is GILLIC50).

  • Late to the Dreamhost party, but I'm another long-time user (I think seven years, but I honestly don't remember) and with the exception of some uptime problems they had a few years ago with power outages in California, they've been great. I host roughly 30 domains with them without issue, running all manner of software.
  • Do NOT use GoDaddy. They have had a huge problem with blogs being hacked this year (I know of more than a dozen just from my small circle of friends, including mine that was hacked twice) and their customer service lacks.

    Big fan of HostGator.
