New gaming system recomendations?
My husband and I are due for a new system. But the question is- which one? I really don't play unless we have friends over, so the majority of the games we like are guitar hero and "Buzz" (trivia). My husband is leaning towards either an xbox or PS3, but I'm favoring the wii. What do you guys have? And what would you suggest?
Re: New gaming system recomendations?
I recommend the PS3 for a number of reasons:
- Guitar Hero & Buzz are available for it. (As well as Rock Band
)
- The Netflix app is wonderful!
- Really popular games always come out for it.
- Blueray is becoming more and more popular, DVD is on the road to obsoletion. You can play Blueray movies with the PS3, eliminating the need for yet another device cluttering your living room.
- HDMI + high quality video... if you don't have an HD TV yet, you'll be happy you have a PS3 when you do. (Wii is old school, not HD, low-resolution)
- Huge game store full of party games
- The new Playstation move & eyetoy seem like great party game hardware (I don't have the move yet, but I have the eye toy and there are a lot of cool things you can do in a 'friends over' setting using it.) The move has wand controllers that enable gameplay similar to the Wii-mote tennis/bowling/etc.
- I don't know how widely people use it, but i do - the PS3 can connect to network storage device or even windows media / itunes UPNP broadcast media libraries, so if you have your PS3 hooked up to the sound systems in your living room you can use it to browse and play from your media library (photos, video, and music) The music visualization is really nice, I've left it up during parties before and it's a nice backdrop. They have some stunning earth-from-space scapes that pan in time to the music, for example.
Hope this helps. I'm a total Playstation fangirl though so I'm probably pretty biased. I just feel like the Playstation has the most to offer.
In the interest of "full" disclosure I'm an Xbox fangirl and I've been testing Kinect and the Zune Marketplace on Xbox LIVE for months now, and the following is entirely my opinion and my opinion alone.
We have two Xbox 360s and a Wii. The Xbox gets used on a daily basis because we use it as an extender for our Windows Media Center (it acts as our DVR instead of having a cable box from Comcast or TiVo). The Wii is good fun for party games, but for first person games the Xbox of PS3 will be better.
As far as I can tell the PS3 Move is a rip-off of the Wii motion sensor; possibly a better rip-off (I haven't played any games on it so I don't know for sure) but a rip-off none-the-less. On a side note unrelated to game play, I've handled a Move controller and they are hilariously phallic.
I will also concede that the PS3 having a blu-ray player is a big advantage over the Xbox.
However, I still prefer the Xbox because I don't actually care about blu-ray (I'm a strange cookie that way).
And the Xbox has Kinect! It's freaking amazing and way more fun than the Wii + Wii-motes. Dance Central is my favorite game of the bunch (right now games are limited for Kinect) and I can also see myself eventually buying and using Your Shape: Fitness Evolved much more frequently than I used Wii Fit.
Xbox will also have the Zune Marketplace (1080p streaming movies, current run TV shows), Netflix, Xbox LIVE gaming, and all of big game titles like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Halo, etc.
What types of games does your DH play on his own? Xbox/PS3 games generally more for "hard core" gamers, and the Wii is generally more for "casual" gamers. But I think with Kinect the Xbox is really changing that up.
To be fair, Playstation 2 had the Eye Toy and motion-based gaming well before the Wii was a sparkle in Nintendo's eye.
But of course you'd never want to make a product purchase decision based on who copied whom. Rather, who did it better?
