Grow light for herb garden?

I have Basil, Parsley and Thyme sitting on my window. I don't think they are getting enough light. Should I buy one of those grow lights? Does anybody else have a year round herb garden? I though of buying one of thos clip on lightbulbs and installing a grow light.

Re: Grow light for herb garden?

  • IMO, florescent light bulbs are the way to go.  The incandecent (or whatever the regular-shaped lightbulbs are called) get too hot for how close you need the light to the plant (just a few inches away).

Thyme is a perennial, but the basil & parsley aren't (parsley is biennial).  As soon as they reproduce/flower, they will start to decline...and you'll need to start again.  IMO, it's best to just freeze the excess of basil & parsley you get from summer planting instead of trying to keep them going.

  • I have an area in my garage with a grow light, but I just use a regular long light. Go to a hardware store and ask them, they are WAY cheaper than buying something tauted as  a "grow light" and work just as well!
