Re: FFFCs

  • I know The Dave Ramsey says we shouldn't... But DH and I bought a 2011 Ford Fusion last night!   I've never had a brand new car in my life!  I'm so excited- but we probably won't drive off with it for another week because they are bringing it up from Dallas.  It's a SEL with black leather and NAV, all the fun stuff.  Yippee!  :)

  • Congrats on the new car JLimberg! Smile

My confession--I think it's ridiculous that the people of Oklahoma elected a retired dentist as our State Supt. I think it proves that the majority of voters were more focused on getting republicans in office than on getting the best candidates in office. What does a dentist know about teaching?!? Nothing, IMO.
  • I'm faking sleep right now so I can surf the Internet while H is in the kitchen.

I felt bad for our waitress at Olive Garden last night. She was in her late 60s and it was ridiculous how hard she was working at her age. It made me wonder what could have gone wrong in her life that she was waiting tables at an age that I view as the retirement phase. I know she could be doing something like paying down someone's medical bills, or she could have just needed the company and something to do. But really all it did was make me think that she didn't plan well enough for the future. It was sad.

  • Boymom---you should read Nickle and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. I think you'd really like it. It's about service workers (like waitresses) who are "lifers." Ehrenreich actually tries to live off of their salaries for several months and finds that they're never actually able to have enough extra money to be able to have any savings/plan for the future, even when they work more than one full time job. It's really sad, but a great read!

My FFFC is that this morning, me, Ms. Uber-Liberal "I'm not taxed enough because there are so many more people and departments who need the help" has been playing with free versions of Turbo-Tax and hoping for a big fat tax return given that this is our first year itemizing so we can finish our upstairs bathroom and bonus room. FWIW, we'll about come out oweing/receiving nothing, which is how it should work, but a girl can dream, right?

I'm also a little irrationally annoyed because due to DH's crazy overtime pay, it looks like he is going to outearn me this year by about $2300. I thought for sure I had him when I taught summer school! (Since we earn very similar amounts and both have random opportunities to add to our pay throughout the year, we always have a friendly competition every year to see who can earn more.) Just wait 3 years until I (hopefully) get tenure and promotion, DH! Your ass is grass, then Stick out tongue

  • I snapped at dh today because I left home and his gps was in my truck and I had to turn around. I was SO mad because I hate leaving late and possibly being stuck in traffic, irritating. Sad that I still avoided all traffic and made it to destination with no interruptions, 30 minutes ahead of schedule. I still refuse to call and apologize.

Second flame-worthy confession, I am leaving for Europe in 2 weeks and my travel buddy (bff) was complaining about going back to work the day after we return. I was mad at her because she took a week off from her firm AND still gets another week for Spain. I was jealous and kind of blew her off and haven't returned her call.

    I'm being mean today.

  • I get really irritated when MIL thinks she can snap her fingers, and we'll drop what we're doing to help her. She's still trying to control H, even though we have NO ties to her anymore, and it's working my last nerve.

H left this week for CO and has had nothing but awesome things to say about the place since he got there. I'm seriously considering moving out there three months earlier than anticipated now...I just don't want to tell my mom - she's dead set against me moving out there.

I'm kinda glad Four Loko is being yanked in Oklahoma [except for the fact that liquor store owners will lose one of their most profitable drinks]. My first experience with it, I got drunk - and I didn't even finish the can. One of my friends [who's 6'4", 120 pounds wet] had TWO on that same night and was blasted for a good 24 hours. Never again.

  • We eat at the OTB down the road from us for lunch sometimes. There is a certain waitress there who I sometimes request that we not be sitted in her area because she always wear too much perfume and it makes me quesy. It kind of reminds me of my grandma's perfume she used to wear.

ETA: That's not really a huge confession so I think I have another one.

DH and I got into a big arguement last night about if our hypothetical son wanted to wear a girl costume. It got pretty heated but we made up. I still can't get past the fact that he would care so much about what people would think if a 5 year old boy was wearing a girl costume. I secretly hoping that if we do have a son one day that he is alittle feminine just so I can see how DH would really react. I know once he sees how excited his son gets about something (even if it's something "girly") that he probably wouldn't mind what people think.

  • Yea JL! Excited about your new car!!!

The "my son is gay" post below really hit home with me.  My husband LOVES the color pink and is really into dressing well and decorating - two things that I happen to love as well. I get SO SICK of the backhanded comments I get from people about how he is gay.  Even his mother and sister have made comments about it. Its so annoying, its so rude, but most importantly, it doesn't bother him at all. I love that I am married to a man that is confident enough to sport a pink shirt at work and give me his opinion when we are in a fabric store picking out drapes.

Sounds kinda like my husband. He flipped when I randomly suggested that we get JJ a play kitchen for Christmas [since he loves helping me out in the kitchen and plays a lot with the one at daycare], saying only girls get play kitchens. His close-mindedness pissed me off, and we got into a big fight over it.

It's not up to my husband what our son wants to do or doesn't want to do - at the end of the day, JJ's going to be JJ, and it's our responsibility as parents to love him unconditionally and to be the best parents for him. Things have gotten better, but I think he [and his male friends, apparently] have this fear that their sons will grow up to be girly and not manly. I think that's incredibly stupid, close-minded and idiotic. And it kinda hurts that they're already passing judgment on those things based on perception and not reality.

ITA with all of this! I asked DH "so if hypothetical son was really excited about something but it happened to be considered girly then you would tell him No?" He just kept going back to "well little boys can be really cruel and he will get his a$$ kicked." I don't think 5 year old boys are really going to care. I knew boys growing up who played with Barbie dolls but I don't recall anyone kicking their butts kicked for it. Our kids are going to be who they want to be and I am not to going to say "No, honey that's for girls you can't play with that since you are a boy." And the same thing for M she plays with whatever she wants to.

Sorry for the rant. Just something I feel passionate about.

  • Ami and OSUWifey, I worry sometimes about what my husband would think too. One of our long-running hypothetical arguments is similar to that. DH is a huge football fan and played throughout his childhood, but he scoffs at the idea of soccer (which I do too, but if my kid wants to play it, I'm certainly not going to say no). So I asked DH once, "What if our son hates football?" And DH replied, "He won't because he's my son." Oh Lord... you can just imagine where this went. I pray we have a girl so this issue will become a non-issue.

I'm proud that she won and look forward to the changes in store. I think it could be a good thing to have a business person in charge, because in a way, a school is a business.

  • My FFFC:

I had my evaluation meeting today after the assistant principal watched my band yesterday. I knew I did fine, but after my meeting, I'm kind of full of myself because he had absolutely nothing negative to say, not even constructive criticism. We talked about posture, and I explained some things to him he didn't know and he told me some things he noticed, that I know about but ignore because they don't affect anything.

He told me that my discipline is amazing, and specifically discussed one child with whom some teachers have problems and how I don't. I enforce school policies, am always at my duties and outside my classroom during passing periods, and I take a lot of leadership roles.

It was nice to be recognized (finally) for all that I do, and for the fact that I'm a great teacher, but I think it might be going to my head a bit Stick out tongue

Just another example of how little they know their son, if you ask me. ;) Actually, I think your husband is the only man I know who could get away with wearing a pink shirt and not look like some kind of jerky frat boy.

  • So, I have two things - one is SERIOUSLY flameful and the other is not:

    Nonflameful (just dorky):

I felt sad when I read that Nick Lachey and that Vanessa chick are engaged.

    VERY flameful:

I am tired of the negative attention that LeAnn Rimes is getting for cheating on her husband.  For one thing, she needs to shut up and stop justifying it.  For another...yes, she should have broken up with her husband prior to having sex with someone else. However...I think it is unreasonable for anyone to expect that someone stay in a marriage that is unhealthy and to where two people aren't in love.  For all we know, her husband could have been a drunken, verbally abusive d!ckhead and at the same time, it does seem like Cibrian's ex wife has her own problems.  I am also curious as to why LeAnn is getting so much negative press about this but he isn't.  Regardless, they appear to be really in love and I just can't judge two people that look THAT happy.

  • Ok- another one. If we ever have a son, I kind of hope he's gay. Obviously I wouldn't anyone to experience homophobia, and it would kill me to see my child go through something like that. BUT someone gets to parent the gay children and I'd much rather it be me than someo wackadoo parent who wants to save/demonize/try to change their kid. Plus, I think DH and I would be pretty fabulous parents to a gay son if I do say so myself :) Dh could encourage him in athletics and traditionally masculine stuff if he's interested and I could take care of the special social/emotional issues if he needs.

I don't think DH would ever say that he hopes his (fictional) son is  gay, but he'd at least be cool enough to roll with it.

  • I'm so glad the elections are over. When it comes to politics, I'm pretty uneducated about them. It's not that I don't care about them, because I do... it's just that the majority of it is way over my head. When it comes to who gets my vote, I try to do a little research - but most of my opinions come from the ads and the thoughts of others (I will say that I do always get the thoughts of others from each side of the spectrum) - and then I decide from there.

Also, even though I vote at every election, I feel like I don't have the right to really talk politics or gripe about what so-and-so is doing in the office since it's all so foreign to me.

  • My inlaws just dropped two (in my mind) bombs on me this morning....  Left me in tears for a good 20 minutes!

I don't care if I get flamed for this stuff either:

    1. I volunteered to host T-day at my house for selfish reasons.  I want to see my family and I don't want to travel to see H's family.  I said I would host so everyone from both sides would feel welcome.  My family (extended and immediate) all understood and everyone was fine with it.  Well GrandFIL said he isn't coming and now GrandMIL, FIL, and MIL are not coming either.  DH is bothered by this but not as much as I am.  The four of them will now spend the day together at the G-parents.  Whatever...  DH said that if we would have agreed to go to the casino his g-father would come.  And he is right!  Pisses me off!  His mother said they are choosing to pick battles so that maybe they can get them to all come to our house for Christmas... Ummm no!  I am not having a house full of people over that close to my due date! I will however keep my happy a$$ in Yukon over the Christmas holiday...

    2.  MIL also informed me and DH that GrandMIL is giving me a dress to open at my shower.  The dress was originally started for one of DH's cousins...  Her father shook her to death before the dress was finished.  I started crying because it was a fact that I would have never known (and didn't need to know) and now I don't think I would ever be able to put the dress on my DD which will offend all of my ILs.

I know I sound like a brat but I just can't help it today...  My emotions are shot!

  • stripes - I totally agree with you about Nick/Vanessa [gag me] and LeAnn.

fuzzy - Thanks for sharing that with us. I'd kinda read up about that the day I voted...which is why I wound up voting for her...but I didn't know she founded two schools. I hope this means big change for our school system.

Another confession: my boss took off for the rest of the day. And I totally don't want to do anything this afternoon because of it.

I live to educate Wink  The Paddack ads that talk about "elite" schools turning kids away were totally false. A graduate from my school, who went to Barresi's middle school as well, wrote a letter to the editor to the Daily OK that was published. Our students were outraged that anyone would label our school "elite" seeing as around 70% are on the free/reduced lunch program, many are first-generation college-bound, and some even work jobs to keep their families afloat. They are proud of the fact that they came from so little and have worked hard for everything they have earned. I understand how they feel--I grew up poor, but am educated and articulate and get quite defensive if a student, or anyone, assumes that I came from an affluent, well-educated family. Because, only smart, educated people are rich!

I'm sorry you are going through all of this today.

Is it just me or does it feel weird that they would want to give you this dress? Especially with the history behind it. That has to be one of the saddest things I read in awhile. I guess I understand why they would want your daughter to wear it but it seems creepy to me.

It kind of reminds me of this guy I know from HS. He accidently shot his sister while on a hunting trip with their family. Years later he married a my friend who had the same first name as his sister. His mom then persauded my friend to name thier baby the name the sister always liked. Just gives me heebie jebbies.
