And this is why...
BIL will never get married (according to DH).
After DH's last autocross race, he blew an oil seal. Since he's going to have to rip half of his car apart to replace the seal, he figured that he would do some of the other repairs that he had put off. BIL got wind of this and told DH to just tell him a part that he needs and BIL will get it for DH for Christmas. Okay, whatever... it's better than BIL getting DH some giftcard or something else we don't need/will throw away.
But then BIL proceeds to go "Oh, and then pick another part that you want and it'll just be my gift to Misa!". *crickets*
Luckily DH told him that was inappropriate (to which BIL responded "I was only kidding haha"... which he wasn't kidding if you knew BIL). If it wasn't for MIL going in depth about DH's birth story for every birthday, I would swear DH was adopted since he is nothing like anyone else in his family!

Nope, this is typical for all of DH's family. I think in the to-be 7 holidays that we will now have spent together, I've only received one gift that was actually for me. And that was after the first year of us dating. Since then it's been a gift that DH wants but is given to me.
And then whenever BIL comes to visit he always has this great idea (aka expensive) of something to do that does not include me. Even though BIL is older than DH, he is really much more immature and socially sheltered. Hence DH's comment on the fact that this is just another reason why BIL will never get married since he doesn't know how to act/what is appropriate.
What you mean you wouldn't love a car part for Christmas...not only will BIL never get married, it sounds like he won't keep a girlfriend long either.

I'm sorry to hear that. That stinks. I agree with the other poster who said, "At least you got a good one." It's great your H knows what is appropriate, esp considering his family.
