New here and intro

Hi ladies! New to this board and I have a question or two.

We're in the process of moving into a rental house where the landlord said we can plant and garden and all but I have no idea what to do since I've never had a yard before.

In the front yard, there are already some bushes (varying sizes) but there's gaps in between them and space in front of them. The front of the house also gets a ton of sun.

Can I plant something now or wait and do it all in the spring? I would google but I have no idea how to even start.

TIA!!

Re: New here and intro

  • I'm pretty new here too, but hi and welcome!  I'm also very much a beginning gardener, but I love it.

I don't know the weather in GA at all, so maybe I'm not the best to give advice, but . . .

If you plant bulbs now, they'll bloom in the spring.  Also, if it's still pretty warm, it's not a bad time to be transplanting summer-blooming flowers.  Generally, you want to move stuff around when it's dormant (not blooming), so move early-bloomers in the fall, and move late-bloomers in the spring.  Other than bulbs at this point, I would wait til spring, though.

Unless it's fenced in, I wouldn't put a veggie garden in the front of the house, but I'm jealous of your full sun for that reason.  I have very little full sun in my yard, so I'm having a lot of trouble picking a spot for a permanent veggie garden, and have just been doing tomatoes and herbs in containers for the past couple of years.

Check out some beginner gardening websites (literally, google "beginner gardening").  I like Doug Green's Garden websites (he's a little snarky, but I appreciate that), and I've heard that the Better Homes and Gardens website is great too.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the info! There aren't any plants to move around right now so I'll get some bulbs to plant. As for the garden, I plan on that going in the backyard since it doesn't get the direct sun in the hottest part of the day and because it's fenced in.

I'll definitely check out those websites!

  • Welcome Emily! This board isn't that active -- especially this time of year. Its more of an on-topic board, and for regular chit chat most of us are regulars on other boards.

I'm curious why Susie? Would your neighbors steal the food?

Because I get the most sun in front, and because of the monsters in my sig, I do all my gardening in front, and in Seattle its very common to see food gardens in front yards.

  • I don't know, it just weirds me out a little.  Not so much that neighbors would steal food, I just feel like in the front it's more susceptible than the back to random kids playing in the yard (yes, my neighbors' kids are often seen running through our bushes), random dogs looking for a bathroom or a snack, etc.  I guess there's really not much reason not to, I just feel kind of weird about it.
  • Oh, that makes sense! I wouldn't want my food peed on either! But for me, that's the backyard. Dogs don't pee in my front yard and the kids only play on the grass.
