Normally I just lurk here, picking up a tip or two along the way. I'll admit it - I'm only modestly green. Except that a few weeks ago my DH & I were watching one of those history channel shows about 2012 & the supposed end of the world. My reaction was not one of yes/no this will/won't happen. Instead, I'm just left with a fascination about how the world would work for the small population of survivors. I'm constantly thinking about things I wouldn't have any idea how to do, and it's really making me see additional value in getting back to more basic functioning.
I realize this makes me sound crazy - but would you be able to cook without electricity? Could you grow (& preserve) enough in your backyard garden to feed your family year round? What about ongoing clothing needs? Keeping a clean & safe household, etc. etc.?
By no means am I suggesting going off the grid or anything extreme like that, but it makes me want to experiment with camping-based cooking techniques, learn more about gardening, learn how to shoot a gun or bow & arrow, maybe get some chickens or something. Again, I know I sound crazy, but I assure you I'm not
Re: I'm officially nuts
H is a big time outdoors man. We already only eat the venison he hunts, and can definitely cook with no electricity if it comes down to it. I think the biggest issue would be storage of food. With no freezer, we'd definitely have to practice different ways of preserving it. I'm fairly confident H would be able to make me animal skin clothes if it came down to it...
I definitely agree with you, though, it's interesting to think about what may happen. How will all the technology addicts live without an app to tell them what to do?!
Totally not crazy, and legitimate question. Forgetting all theories of higher beings etc, IMO, eventually some disease will come through and kill off a good percentage of our population. I think its only a matter of time, things like H1N1 have a legitimate reason to scare us.
ANYWHOO.... haha.
Where we live now, we'd be pretty dead. My parents live a little out of town, with about a half acre. So we could possibly manage their. My father is an excellent hunter and although he is getting older and slowing down, he could teach my H and brother. My mom grew up on a farm, but certainly doesn't have a green thumb. She has more basic knowledge about growing things but struggles to implement them. I think with my parents, brother DH and I working together we could survive. Who knows tho ya?
I lurk here a lot and post occasionally too... so HI!!!
My DH and I watched that program too and I've always had 2012 on my mind since I learned about it in 6th grade actually! But I also started thinking about cooking, what we'd eat, how we'd drink etc too. you are not crazy.
