Continuous beep/chirp noise w/new computer?
OMG I hope someone can help me out on here. We recently purchased an HP desktop with Windows 7, it constantly has this low pitch sound kind of like a chirp or beep. It happens every 2min or so and it's almost like a connection reminder or something. I'm not sure if it's coming from the wireless USB for connection status, internet status or what but it's driving me nuts!
I went to the Control Panel for sounds but can't find the sound or what it's for. Is anyone familiar with this?
Re: Continuous beep/chirp noise w/new computer?
Uhm, the first thing I thought from your title is maybe you have a button stuck on your keyboard? But usually that is continuous, and not intermittent like you're describing. I'm only mentioning it in a just in case scenario.
Usually when USB connections change (are inserted or removed) its a doulbe sound (doo-duu or duu-doo, if you know the sound you may "hear" what I'm trying to type). If that keeps happening, then I'd worry about cable connections, breaks in cables, or maybe the hardware slot where you plug the USB end in, but, honestly, I'm not sure what else to call it.
Are there any alerts in the bottom right hand (or wherever you see the clock at) of your computer when you hear this sound? The alerts could either pop up there or just change how many icons are in that area of the task bar.
(note: I'm not an expert...I worked on computers 10 years ago and usually can home fix all my families computers. Hopefully someone with more info can chime in)

Hi alilfish,
If you plug out any speakers or headphones you have connected to the computer, do you still hear the noise? (If you don't hear it anymore, it's Windows making the sound. If you do still hear it after plugging those out, the sound is coming from the PC speaker and may be Windows or a hardware issue, like a stuck keyboard.)
Let us know and it'll help us narrow down the issue.
Thanks for the advice. It's not a noise coming from the PC, it's from the speakers. It's not a warning noise, it seems like a reminder noise or something. I tried finding it in my sounds file but can't. It would actually be a pleasing noise for an email notification or something but I cannot figure out where it's coming from or why and it drives me nuts. I have been muting the computer which is fine but if I Skype or listen to music it still happens.
This is an HP desktop with Windows 7 if that helps.
Hi alilfish,
Have you ever used the Windows 7 task manager before? There's some instructions on how to open it here:
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=2576
What I would do in your position is look through both the 'Applications' and 'Processes' tabs to see if anything that might be making the sound is listed. Then I'd try clicking the suspicious ones one-by-one and clicking 'End Task' on each one - by process of elimination you might be able to figure out which task it is. It *may* crash your computer if you end task on the wrong app/process, though, so make sure you don't have anything unsaved/important open when you do this.
Alternatively, if you can post some screenshots of both the applications and the process tab, I can take a look and give you some good guesses at what might be causing it.
This is a new computer as you mentioned - have you heard this beep/chirp since the very first time you started up the computer, or did it happen a little while after the computer was brand-new?
I'll definitely try the task manager, thanks for that suggestion. We have had the noise since we started up the computer which is what's making me think it's some sort of reminder. I'm pretty good with computers and electronics so I'm getting frustrated that I can't figure out what it is.
Thanks for the help!
