Anyone ride the train recently?

I'm thinking about taking a trip on Via Rail through the Quebec/Windsor corridor next month. I'm a nervous flyer and I'm thinking the train would be a decent alternative, especially in snowy unpredictable December. I don't mind that it takes so much longer to get there, unlike driving at least I can sit back and relax and take a nap.

The last time I took a train it was the week of Christmas and it was PACKED. Has anyone rode on a non-holiay week train? Is this business as usual, or is it a little less like a can of sardines on a normal week? Does anyone else like traveling by train as well?

Re: Anyone ride the train recently?

  • Well, that is a pretty busy route. I used to take it once a month or so between Toronto and London, but I always travelled on weekends, and those trains were always sold out. I'm sure it would be better if you could avoid weekends.

I certainly preferred the train to the Greyhound!

  • I took the Via regularly a few years ago - it was always sold out.
  • i love the train..i find it relaxing i go from van to seattle and notice it gets busier towards my stop ..i like that it has area to get food from..and usually the workers on their are pretty freindly.
  • That corridor is usually busy in general. I haven't been on the train in awhile, but DH has and he's been on during the week. Still somewhat busy, but I'd much rather chill out on a train where you can stretch out a little, walk around...I find it a much more comfortable ride.
