New to gardening-Into and question.

Hello, I'm new around these parts and very excited to start gardening.

DH and I have a LO on the way, due in Jan. We recently moved into a townhome with next to no yard :( .

We have a 5 x 5 square of grass in the front, and cement in the back. So container gardening it is!

I'm hoping to plant a container of carrots in the next few days. We're zone 8 so it's still 80 during the days here, and at least 50 at night. So I think if I plant immediately and bring them inside soon (or keep them inside from the start?) they'll do ok.

Does anyone do container plants indoors in the fall/winter? Do you think my carrots will survive?

Re: New to gardening-Into and question.

  • I wouldn't grow carrots indoors.  You'd need a ridiculous amount of direct light inside for them to develop at all. Plus, you'd need deep containters...like at least a foot deep if not more.

Instead, you might consider growing micro-greens on a windowsill (google for instruction) or reading up a few container gardening books so that you can hit the ground running in a few months.

  • I agree with Kastle. If I were you, I'd start my outdoor food crops in the spring.
