I have it for my PC. Like it a lot. There's an expansion called Ambitions that give you goals to complete for your Sim [long term and short term] so you sort of feel that you have to accomplish lol.

Does it have any network / social components to it? E.g., can you play online with friends or is it a local-only game?

I have it on my Mac and I love it!  Been a Sims fan since the very first game came out.

I love it on the computer, but I do not like playing it on my ipod or any gaming system. I think the controls are really annoying to use. You can probably rent it from Blockbuster or Hollywood Video or something to try it out and see if you like it. We bought a month of unlimited game rentals at Hollywood video to try out all of the Wii games to see which ones we wanted to buy.

 There used to be a Sims Online, but it didn't get as high of a rating so they stopped doing it. So to answer your question, there is no network, you can not play with other people. 

 Although, there is an "exchange" on the website where you can download other people's creations. i.e. towns, houses, clothes, people, etc.

 I have the Sims3 for PS3 and I love it. I was used to playing the ones for PC and the controls are a little different but I like it a lot better! Just takes a bit of getting used to! I like it a lot!!
