Two Questions re: blogs & websites

Hi Nesties...

I have 2 questions and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

I have a budding graphic design business and I would love to find some great blogs for this area.  Anything from inspiration to tutorials to running the business.  Just anything...I love to read about what everyone is doing, but I have such a hard time finding this stuff with Google.  So I'd love to see what everyone is reading in the Graphic Design/Website Design industry.

2nd Question:

What do you rec for learning not only dreamweaver but learning code as well.  I have been working on my site for a month now and it's driving me crazy because I have such a hard time finding the answers to things I get stuck on.  I would love to have a reliable go to site for when I am stumped.

Thanks!

What kind of code?  ASP?  PHP?  Perl? JavaScript?  HTML markup?  CSS?

  • I'd like to start with HTML and CSS.  I know a few things, but would like to know more to really feel like I know what I am doing here.
  • Lynda.com is a great resource for learning software and technical skills - the monthly membership is great, especially since they added the exercise files for monthly subscribers (they used to only be available to yearly subscribers).
  • I frequently use the w3schools website to look up answers to my CSS questions.  They have some fairly comprehensive information about both HTML and CSS:
    http://www.w3schools.com/html/
    http://www.w3schools.com/css/

However, you may want something with a bit more overhead explanation if you're just starting out.  If you want something basic, try doing a Google search for HTML tutorial and you'll get quite a few results.

When it comes to actual published material, DH loves the HeadFirst series from O'Reilly.  Here is their HTML/CSS book.  (One of his hobbies is learning new programming languages, so he has all kinds of different books for dozens of different languages.)  His latest thing is buying the digital e-books directly from the O'Reilly site, since he can store them on the computer (or read them on the iPad) and then search through the text later.

(Personally, I'm more a fan of the dry, technical books, as you can tell from my avatar.  Haha!)
