Indianapolis visit...what is there to do?

Hi ladies!!  I am from Cincinnati and I am trying to think of somewhere to escape for a few days next week. My H turns 40 on the 18th and I am thinking of surprising him with a trip to Indy. The Pacers are playing on Thursday (his b-day) so I was going to get tickets to the game for Thursday, but we would need to fill the day Friday. What is there to do in Indy? I have only been to Indianapolis a few times and I have always been there for something specific and just drove there and home the same day. Any ideas are appreciated! H isn't much of a theatre or museum kind of guy though, so not sure that would be much help. If there is anything sports related that would be AWESOME!

TIA

Re: Indianapolis visit...what is there to do?

  • Hello!!!

This might not kill too much time but we do have the NCAA Hall of Champions downtown too.  I've never been in there.  Their website is: www.ncaahallofchampions.org

I also suggest checking out the Slippery Noodle Inn...good food, good drinks, & wonderful music. Their website:  www.slipperynoodle.com

There are a few brew pubs downtown that might be good...there's The Ram, Rock Bottom Brewery, & Alcatraz.  And there are 2 wineries downtown...(see: www.indywinetrail.com).

That's all I can think of right now...have fun!

  • Conseco is really nice and a fun experience even if the Pacers aren't having a great game. Also the tour of the speedway is pretty cool. I think that Lucas oil sometimes does public tours, and of course you should drive by Hinkle Fieldhouse where the Butler Bulldogs play.

If you want food in Indy:

Harry and Izzy's or St. Elmos (sister restaurants) downtown are great for a nice meal. Harry and Izzy's is less $$, but still has a great atmosphere.

Yatz is amazing if you're into cajun style food. There is a location downtown and in Broad Ripple. It's cheap and filling.

Bazbeaux also has locations downtown and in Broad Ripple for really good pizza. Their menu is really nontraditional, but delicious.

IMO best dessert in Indy is a cupcake at Flying Cupcake (again locations downtown on Mass Ave and in Broad Ripple).

  • You have gotten great suggestions already, I just wanted to add--the NCAA museum is a lot of fun. BUT, we expected it to fill an afternoon, and even doing every activity we were done in about 90 minutes. So you really should check it out, just don't plan on it filling a ton of time.

The Indiana State Museum is really close too, and is pretty cool as museums go (my DH is not a really a museum guy either)

Hope you have a great visit!
