Best inexpensive laptop without bells/whistles?

DD wants a laptop for Christmas, and I'm a little overwhelmed by the selection out there. She'll use it primarily for checking email and Facebook, downloading digital photos from her camera, and the occasional word document or powerpoint. No gaming or anything like that.

I'd like to spend as little as possible, since it will likely get dropped or left at a friend's house. Once she's older, we can upgrade. Any recommendations (or advice on what to AVOID buying) are greatly appreciated!

  • Maybe a netbook would be good for her? ?We recently bought an Asus Eee PC to bring with us on our honeymoon. ?The small size made it easy to travel with. ?It has a 160 GB hard drive, and I had plenty of room to download all 900 pictures I took in Italy while on our honeymoon. ?It's great for basic web browsing and word processing, but I wouldn't try photo editing on ir since the screen is small. ?We paid about 400 for ours.

  • Thanks, bklyn. I had considered a netbook, but the screen's only 10 inches diagonal, and I wondered how that would affect web browsing. Does it condense font and picture size, or do you have to scroll from side to side to see everything?

  • I just bought a HP laptop for about $400 from best buy.  Pretty basic, but has a duel processor so it's supposedly a little faster than a single.
