Here is a recent dog that could really really use the help!!

Good morning, everyone.  This morning I received a call from our local humane society asking for help.  They are out of space and as of today will have to start euthanizing dogs to make room for more to come in.  Unfortunately, Butters if first on the list because he?s been there for over a month.  The woman I spoke with said that the entire staff is very somber this morning because they know what?s coming.  She said that Butters is truly a wonderful dog, even described him as an ambassador for his breed.  This past weekend I decided we wouldn?t take in any more dogs right now, but Butters? story broke my heart.  So I?m asking for you to consider fostering him, or passing this on to other dogs lovers in hopes of finding him a foster or forever home.  If anyone is able to help, I need to know before 5:00 tonight.

Below is his information as listed on the Humane Society?s website:

Thank you!

Re: Dog Fostering PLEASE HELP

  • Do you have any additional info? Website with more info on the rescue group - is it breed specific? Location? Requirements to foster? Expenses covered?

Could be. Looks like the dogs available for adoption through that rescue group (Unchained) are all pitties or am staffs, so the breed would make sense.

We can't foster those breeds (we're already at the limit of "high risk" dogs that our homeowner's insurance will allow with our current dog since he's a rott mix).

If Unchained can't find a foster, OP could have the shelter Butters is currently at contact another shelter that has space to see if they can transfer Butters to another place to avoid euthanizing. The shelter I volunteer at (Minnesota Valley Humane Society) does take transfers from other shelters, both in state and out-of-state. Almost every week, they're taking transfers from other shelters. They never euthanize for space and don't have time limits. As long as they are healthy enough and safe enough to adopt, pets can stay until they are adopted. MVHS has a good track record of adopting pit bulls and other bully breed dogs, too. There are 4 pits/pit mixes there now (out of 16 dogs available for adoption), and a ton of people were looking at them when I was there Saturday.

  • We don't have a breed ban/limit/etc on our homeowners insurance, and we have a rottie mix. But we're already fostering one dog. I wish we had more room. :(

What insurance company do you use?

Our agent told us we were fine since we got our pit bull after our policy started, but I'm concerned this could become an issue in the future (as dumb as it is).

OP - Wish we could help.  I love pit bulls and Stella would love a friend, but we just don't have the room (or time) for another pup right now.

  • I wish I could help. I don't know that we could take in another dog at all, but we definitely can't take one with an unknown history with other dogs, cats or children...since we have all 3...

Obviously not dawnmarie, but State Farm does not have breed restrictions - providing that the dog does not have any aggression on record.

Farmer's. We have the.best.agent.ever. Everyone we've ever referred to him has switched, and been super happy.

    Thanks!  (You too, SillyStraw!)

I'm happy with the insurance we have now, but I just want to be prepared should it become an issue down the road.

  • On the insurance issue ... we used to have AAA and they have no breed restrictions on dogs. They never even asked if we have pets. However, their customer service was so bad it wasn't even funny. We had problems on top of problems on top of problems. We couldn't stand working with them anymore, so we finally switched.

We're currently with Liberty Mutual, and we're really happy with them, minus the irritation about the dog breed thing. They will insure homeowners who have a dog on the "high-risk" breed list (the same list of 10 breeds that many insurance companies use), however there's a limit of one dog from that list. Our agent did say that they would waive that limit after we've been insured with them for a full year with no incidents. We've only been with them since February, so we haven't hit the 1-year mark yet. After February, we can adopt all the "scary" dogs we want :-)

You're welcome. I didn't realize you had a dog at all, much less an adorable bully breed.

  • Unchained is based out of Minnesota (southern suburbs) and yes you are right we foster and save the "banned" breeds pits staffs etc We have an application process and help financially with food, vet bills etc so all you have to do is have a good home for them to stay at for a while until we can find a forever home for them!
