Gifts for Nieces

Hi ladies.

I have my first Christmas with nieces and nephews, and I need some help!  I have a niece in the 4th grade and one in the 1st grade.  What would be good to get for them?  I have a $20 limit for each.  They are girlie girls.  The 4th grader is a little shy, and the 1st grader is very outgoing.  My SIL has not responded with ideas and all shopping will happen this weekend!  (It may sound crazy, but I love shopping early, especially since I am due in December.)

I am also planning to get a book for my nephew who is almost 3.  Any good titles or suggestions?

TIA.

Re: Gifts for Nieces

  • I'd get books all around.

  • Suggestions on which books?  What it popular or recommended for those ages?  I do not know what kids are reading now.

  • Book Suggestions:

1st Grader: Junie B Jones series, Fancy Nancy Series

3 y/o- Clifford books, bernsteen bears, The Tub People, the very hungry caterpillar, polar express... (can be wordier than younger kids..just make sure there are some great illustrations)

4th grader- Are you there God, it's me margaret (judy blume), tales of a fourth grade nothing (judy blume), dear america series, the spiderwick chronicles

definitely agree with PP for Polar Express for the 3yr old. My nephew got that book when he was around that age (he is 5 now) and still reads it. Were even doing a Polar Express train ride this year with all the kids.

For the 4th grader "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is a favorite of my 9 yr old niece and her friends.

  • My nephew loves the Skippyjon Jones Books, by Judy Schachner. It's a series about a Siamese cat. I don't know all of them, I just know his favorite is the book where Skippyjon Jones thinks he's a Chihuahua. They are pretty funny, both for kids and for the adults reading them. It's called "Skippyjon Jones in the Dog House."

ETA - Also, "Silly Bandz" are REALLY popular with kids right now. They are rubber bands that are made in different shapes. They are fairly cheap, and you can currently get them just about anywhere, and in any shapes you want. They even have Disney Characters, Harry Potter, Warner Bro Characters, and several others.

  • Books are always good gifts.

For the 4th grader I'd begin the American Girl Series. I absolutely loved them as a kid, and my 10 year old cousin is very into them now as well.

I agree with PP about the Junie B series or the Fancy Nancy series.

Another idea would be to check out the target dollar section (I think I've suggested this in every post about gifts for kids but it's because I think it's great) They have lip gloss, socks, hair stuff, nail polish, pens and note pads, jewelry etc. Get a bunch of stuff and find a cute bag or basket to put it in and VIOLA a great gift that the girls will love.

Another Idea is to make the fleece tie blankets. Total of less than $15 to make each blanket, and 1 hour of time for each blanket. Then each time they snuggle up with it they will think of you!

  • I have daughters in 1st and 4th grade -- books are a good idea (1st grader - Junie B Jones or Cam Jenson, 4th grader - Harry Potter, Charlie Bones).  Arts and crafts kits are also great gifts -- especially jewelry making ones.

  • Books are great - but you run the risk of getting a book they already have.  If you go with books MAKE SURE to personalize them on the inside cover so they will remember that you gave them the book.

I would get jewelry making kits from JoAnn or Michael's craft store, (40% off coupons in the paper every Sunday!) or some sort of fun craft kit.  My 9 year old cousin got a make-up kit last year from me - she could create her own lip gloss colors & flavors & she loved it.

    Good luck!

  • Great kids books:

    • The Garden of Abdul Gasazi (they'd all love it)
    • Roald Dahl books; any of his poetry, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, especially Matilda
    • Oh The Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess, especially the popup version
    • Where the Wild Things Are (although a lot of kids have this, Dr. Suess, and Robert Munsch books...all good though)
    • Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, a favourite of all little girls

    Hope this helps!
