Personal Property Tax

I got my letter today, with the amount I owe to the city of St. Louis for my car.  We don't pay personal property tax on anything else.  Here's my question... we lived in the city for the first several years that we lived in STL.  In June of 2009, we moved to Creve Coeur.  Do I still pay personal property tax to the city?  It seems like I wouldn't, since I didn't live there at all in 2010.  If not the city, then who do I pay the personal property tax to?

I guess I should have thought of it when they asked which cars I owned back on 01/01/10, but I didn't realize it was sent from the city.  They have my current address, so they must know I'm not in the city anymore... so I'm confused.

I was planning on calling tomorrow, but if there's an obvious answer, I thought I'd ask here first, so I don't sound like a dummy on the phone.  TIA! :)

  • No, it has nothing to do with the 1% city tax on income.  I had that for a few years (for a while living in IL and then for a while living in the city), so I know it's not that.  It really helps the city though, so a tiny amount from everyone in the city is a lot for the city as a whole.

In case anyone else wanted an answer, it turns out that when you change your address for personal property tax, that new address is used for "billing purposes" not for "determining where you live" purposes.  Seems dumb to me, but I guess the city and the county don't talk to each other.

I had to write a letter to the county explaining that I live in the county now and I need them to send me a bill.  Luckily, it worked pretty quickly because now I need to pay the county, then send proof that I paid the county, and proof that my living in the city terminated.  It can't be easy, I guess...
