Shampooless and sweaty head from exercising

Last night after spin class my head was soaked.  I "washed" my hair with baking soda and water the day before and everything I've read says to only do that every three days.  So what do I do the days between when I've been to the gym? Last night I just rinsed with water and I put a little eucalyptus oil on my hands and ran them through my hair so it wouldn't smell too bad.  Any tips on how to help with sweaty head, or can I just wash with baking soda and water when I need it?

  • I've only gone shampooless when hiking, so i don't know for sure, but i'm thinking that the water should be enough, since sweat isn't oily and the shampoo alternatives you are using are to remove excess oil.

  • If it smells you can do the baking soda wash again. I did the baking soda thing and you don't have to strictly stick to an only three day regimen. I used to do the baking soda wash. You may also want to add a little lemon to it too. Helps with smell.
  • How long have you ladies gone without shampoo? I'm on day 3. Husband thinks I'm nuts. I haven't used any baking soda or anything but water yet. Do you wet with water every day?

How can I make my hair more fluffy at the roots? It's not super greasy like I thought it would be but just kinda flat.

  • I usually go 3-5 days without shampooing but I have washed 2 days in a row with the baking soda/water,  I didn't notice any issues.  I hadn't heard of the 3 day rule before.

I don't wash my hair with plain water or anything between baking soda/water washes.  I just let it be and it seems fine.  I actually prefer it on days 2 and 3.  But, I have wavy/curly hair so maybe it's different for straight hair?

  • It's okay to wash multiple days in a row with baking soda if you feel you need it.  You can get some build up of white powder if you wash with it too often and/or use too much, but that's not likely to happen in just a day.  The solution, if you encounter that, is to just wash by rinsing with water until it subsides.

I haven't used shampoo in almost 3 years.  It took a few months for my hair to seem truly normal again after I went off shampoo though.  I typically wash with baking soda a couple times per week and with just water whenever I am in the shower.  I needed the baking soda more often when I was just getting started.

  • I was shampoo-less for several years and no one would ever have guessed.  I made the transition when I was living in a back-woods location where it didn't matter so much how my hair looked.  Like pp said, I had a not so attractive few months while my hair adjusted to the lack of shampoo and stopped producing so much oil, but once that period was over people were always shocked to learn that I didn't use shampoo because my hair never looked greasy.  When I did it, I just used water and not baking soda.  I would get my hair wet every time I took a shower.  I did plenty of exercising in those years, and it was fine without shampoo.  I had to switch back, though, after I became a bike commuter.  The sweaty head in a helmet for so much time everyday was just too much.
