How do you feel about Cam Newton?

I feel like people should leave it alone. Nothing has been proven, and if he doesn't get the heisman becasue of what MIGHT happen, or what MIGHT have happened, that would be a damn shame.

And I don't even like Auburn. lol.

Re: How do you feel about Cam Newton?

  • Until anything is PROVEN, I could really give a damn.

Actually, I could give a damn anyway.

Peoplehave a way of not letting things go.  It could be years from now, but if the cheating did in fact happen, it'll get exposed.  And they've proven that they will revoke the award if they see fit (See: Reggie Bush.)

Things'll shake out as they should, I think.  But in the meantime, you're innocent until proven guilty, and leave the kid alone.

  • How do I feel about Cam Newton? Well, I feel like he is one hell of a college football player....by far the best I've ever seen. His energy and his drive are refreshing and he is incredibly fun to watch.

I hate that this is happening to him and his family and I can't imagine what it must be like to see your name splashed across the headlines for crazy stuff like this like he has.

I feel confident that he is focused and determined and will show up big time against the dawgs on Saturday.

Now, if there is any truth to these accusations, I'm sure he will be held responsible for his actions and I wouldn't want it any other way. But, until then, War Damn Eagle and War Damn Cam!

  • I wish they'd freaking leave him alone. Why did none of this come out while he was playing at his other schools? Why all this crap now? Just leave.it.alone. Freaking haters.

  • I think where there is smoke, there is fire. But he deserves the benefit of being innocent until proven guilty. It will come out sooner or later like it did for Reggie Bush.
  • If there's one thing I've learned about sports fans and the sports media, it's that they never leave anything alone.

Personally, I don't follow enough SEC football to have an opinion on the matter.

    Exactly.

Let the man do what he does best.  Inncocent until proven quilty.  So back off until something convincing comes along.

  • Madelyn said exactly what I was thinking.

I just think they should leave him alone. Anytime anyone does well there is always someone out there who wants to ruin it for them. Cam has handled all of this very well though and I like him even more. He's not stooping to their level and he's just letting it all roll off his back.

As for it not coming out before then, I've read numerous articles stating that everything came out 10 months ago and it was checked into already and they had closed it because they didn't find anything supporting the allegations from Bond. The SEC/NCAA said that a lot of things like this are taken care of quietly and we don't hear about the majority of them. The only reason we're hearing about it now is because people aren't happy with how well he's doing.

As for the cheating allegations, I know that if he did cheat numerous times like it's being said that he did, he would have been expelled from the school from doing so. UF has confirmed that he was never in any danger from being expelled so I don't believe this one bit.

I hate this for him, and any other college athlete that has come under a media storm like this. He's just a college student trying to get his degree and play a sport he loves while doing so.

    War Damn Cam!

  • I think he's an amazingly talented quarterback.  I think he totally deserves the Heisman based on his performance on the field.

That said, if there is truth to this situation I do feel very sorry for him, but he's done some questionable things in the past.  He got in trouble for having a stolen laptop (charges were later dropped) and I could just see an agent swooping in and making some bad decisions for a starry-eyed kid.

So I guess based on talent, he is a hell of a player and he deserves the Heisman.  At the same time, can't help but think something is amiss here...

  • I don't think it's so much he that is starry eyed, but his father.

    Totally agree with this.

I think he's innocent until proven guilty, but with this whole Reggie Bush thing still fresh on everyone's mind...if this thing gets any bigger, Cam's in trouble in terms of getting the Heisman.

  • I think it would be a damn shame if Cam wasn't given the Heisman just because of these allegations, which, so far have not implicated Auburn/Auburn's recruitment or signing of Cam one bit, and now seem to be heading in the direction of a cover-up for something that Mississippi State did during its recruitment of Cam, not something that the Newtons' did...

There has never been any proof of any wrongdoing by Cam or his father. All of the analysts have said all season long that Cam is, without a doubt, the Heisman front runner. If he continues to play the way he has in the past 10 games in our remaining games, and doesn't get the Heisman, it will be obvious that it because of these allegations. And then what happens if/when in 4-5 months these allegations are proven to be false or all issues at Mississippi State and no wrongdoing by Cam or the Newtons...then how do the Heisman voters look?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Cam, his family, or Auburn did something wrong and it is PROVEN, I want everyone who is responsible to face the proper consequences. I love Auburn and of course I want this to all shake out in our favor but, to me, it is more than a college football season and a Heisman trophy. I have direct ties to the athletic department here and I want it to be a clean and honorable place. And if it isn't, we deserve what is coming out way. But, until then...it is all just speculation...

And, let's be honest, if the only reason they don't give Cam the Heisman is because of these allegations and his "integrity"...you can't really give it LaMichael James--who everyone has said is behind Cam in the Heisman race--, now can you? Huh?

  • I find this to be very interesting, this entire discussion.  So many people here are right - IF the allegations are proven to be true THEN he should be punished.

One of DH's closest friends was the Director of Compliance at USC when Bush was there..... Bush's family did a great job of hiding everything (obviously not good enough now).  K (DH's friend) reviewed the lease, went to the house, verified how the rental payments were being made.  He swore up and down during that time that the Bushes were good people, they would never lie.  But they did.  And fortunately for Reggie, it was uncovered after the fact, after he was drafted and secured that first round pick.

But let's face it, recruiting is a big business.  DH and his counterparts at other universities (DH also works in compliance in collegiate athletics) all have stories about recruits asking for money, about their AAU or high school coaches asking for money, parents asking for money... And some schools pay, some do not.

Madelyn, I know you want things to be clean.  Everyone affiliated with their program wants the program they support to be ethical.  I once asked DH if he would ever take a compliance position with an SEC school and he said "Maybe, but it would be hard."  Not hard because the towns that most SEC schools in are fairly small, but because the SEC has had major recruiting issues, and ethics issues (look at Bruce Pearl at Tennessee, Alabama was on probation for boosters paying for players, Florida has had players arrested).  And frankly because the SEC is a big name conference, it's easy for the NCAA to make examples of the big guys (does anyone really remember the St. Bonaventure issue from 2002?)  because those are the names that stick.

Anyway, I'm eager to see how this plays out.... and eager to see how the NCAA and the NFLPA collaborate on meting out sanctions on programs and draft picks in the future, if they do it at all.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
  • Also, I have to add, I just asked DH to review this thread and he just said, "I'm in compliance.  The more schools that cheat, the better for me, but it sucks to do the cleanup."

  • I agree with Roar. And I think it's safe to say that ALL of the big name/power houses do it. It just goes with the territory. I am an AU Alumni and my DH (also an alum) and I love Auburn more than anyone. But we know it's not always a squeaky clean place. It would be silly to think so. Some schools are just better at not getting caught. However, this crap with Cam is bogus. While it has been under investigation for a while, it's funny how the timing of it really coming out has happened. It all comes down to a lot of people get jealous of Auburn and many don't want to see us succeed. See 2004. Just a way to try and knock Auburn down. But it's ok. I'm not worried. I support Cam and our alma mater, 100%. And Auburn is at it's best when it is down and getting slammed. So those dirty dawgs may wish this stuff never got started, because there is nothing stronger than an Auburn team backed by the Auburn family 100%.

  • I agree, too. I don't think there are a lot of schools who are totally clean of any of this type of silliness.

And I hope UGA gets shut out tomorrow. Omg I hate Georgia.

Side note: Vegas took the game off the line... what do you think that means? Do they know something we don't? ;)

  • I would not go so far to say that every big time program does things illegally. However I would not be surprised if they turn up something illegal in this case.
