  • Growing up... my parents always had a fake one. My grandparents had a real one. DH likes real ones. We will have a real one this year. :)
  • Real and only real.  I have even broken state fire laws to have my real tree in my condo a couple years (I did not put up lights though).

The thought of any christmas tree not having a home at christmas (a fruitless  death) makes me sad.

  • I grew up with a fake one, but loved the few years we splurged and got a real one.  DH and I have a fake because of living in a rental townhouse, but we both wish we had the real deal!

  • Always real! I can't imagine having a fake one.

  • Always real - even when FI and I had to get a half tree (like the top of a tree when they use the rest for wreaths) because we had a tiny apartment. But we decorated that sucker anyways!

My grandparents always had a fake tree because they didn't want the hassle of going out every year and getting one. I can't really see why you'd want a fake one if you weren't my grandparents but some people seem to like them.

I think part of the fun of Christmas is going to pick out your tree, figuring out how to get it home, vacuuming the needles off the floor, getting your fingers all sappy when you string the lights and having your home smell like pine :)

  • Artificial for us. I'm extremely allergic to any type of pine tree or bush.

  • We always had real trees growing up.  Last year I was living with my parents (post-college, pre-marriage) and I got a cat.  My mom was affraid my cat would climb the tree and my dad was affraid of a real tree catching fire and destroying the very old, wooden house they were living in, so they got a fake tree for the first time.  And my cat loved it.  She thought we put it in the house just for her to climb in and see how many ornaments she could knock down.  By the time Christmas came, the tree was mangled.  My parents gave me the tree when I got married and moved out, so that's what DH and I will be putting up this year.  I'll try to fluff it up and make it look pretty, but I'm sure my cat will mangle it again.
  • I'm highly allergic to real tree's so I've only ever had an artifical tree. DH never had a real tree either. I love the smell of real ones but they don't like me. Guess i just need to burn some good tree smelling candles to make up for it

  • I was all about the real tree and DH and I use to go and cut it down every year together.  Three years ago we brought home our tree and began decorating and realized that it was absolutely INFESTED with spiders!!!! The warm house must have woken them all up!  Totally GROSS and ruined real trees forever for DH and me.  We took the tree out to the dumpster and went straight to Home Depot.

    AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fake for us too.  We used to get real, and a few years ago the water and the entire bottom of the tree starting reeking of a moldy mildew stench...ruined the real for me.  Not as scary as spiders, but still not pleasant.

  • Fake.

    1. It's economical

    2. It's more environmentally friendly since you can use it again and again.

    3. It's easy. I don't have to borrow a truck to get it home or scratch up my car.

    4. It was cheap.

    5. The holidays are the time when we are home the least. I would not want a tree to die if I don't have time to enjoy it.

  • Grew up with real trees and then my parents switched to fake when I was in High School. I have only had fake trees because of renting. I would love to have a real one someday, but I'm not too keen on having to clean up after all the needles that will inevitably fall off the tree while it's up.
  • I've had a fake tree for the past few years because I've been single and living with girlfriends in rentals, but now that I'm married I can't wait to get a real tree!  I grew up with a real tree every single year.  DH and I are still in an apartment, but I plan on getting a "charlie brown" tree--hopefully it's not against our lease :P

  • DH and I always get a real tree and I love them!! I always request to take home the extra branches that they cut off when they are trimming the trunk. Then I make a nice wreath with it or some type of tablet decoration! Smells sooo good!!!

  • We have a nice artifical tree.  We would never remember to water a live tree!  Plus, one of hubby's friends has a pine allergy...go figure.
  • Fake, cuz we live in an apartment.  I burn one of those piney scented candles from B&B Works to try and make it a little more festive though lol.

Actually fake trees are HORRIBLE for the environment....

  • I usually do fake as I am out of town for a significant period of time and do not want a real tree to become a fire hazard. I love the smell of real trees so I used to go to the tree lot and get boughs (scraps) to put on my mantel and in the firplace - in florida you do not use a fireplace much. Have not done this since i moved to Texas 4 years ago but maybe this year i will get some boughs to decorate. HB and I plan to buy a new fake tree prelit with LED lights. We are currently looking at them.

This only makes sense to me if you're talking about going into the woods and chopping down forests for xmas trees, but most of them are grown on tree farms, so I'm not sure why they're so environmentally unfriendly  Hmm

In case you're wondering where everyone went: http://pandce.proboards.com/index.cgi
  • Real, I know it's a pain to clean up, but nothing compares to the smell and how beautiful it is.

(Those candles or sprays aren't the same.)

  • Real. We go to a you-cut place, or into the forests where you can get a permit to cut down your tree.

Better for the environment. Smells like Christmas. We've never had a fake tree!

  • A fake prelit tree! Only takes 5 min to put up, looks great, and isn't messy.  I use a Bath and Body Works wallflower for smell.
  • Fake pre-lit.

    It's cheaper over the years.

    Easier to put up.

I'm the kind of person that likes to decorate very very early. If I got a real tree it would be brown by Christmas.

  • Fake. A real one is risky with fires and the dog could knock it over. I also have to many special decorations that I do not want to mistakenly get thrown out with the tree.
  • Fake but we do plan on getting a real one next year.
  • This is kind of a funny question for me... I hate anything fake. Fake flowers, fireplaces, finishes, whatever. But I have fake Christmas trees. So how do I justify this? Well, first, I visit my family for the holidays so I don't want to leave real trees hanging out. Real trees make a mess! I like to decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, because I'm a musician who is extremely busy during the holidays, (everyone love handbells at Christmas.) If could get a "ball" tree that could be planted in nice back yard, I would not mind, but I hate the idea of chopping down a tree, just to have it hang out in my living room for a few weeks. I also like having the tree up for a little while in January.

I do have a lot of fresh greens and real flower arrangements around the house during the holidays.
