xp: MAC owners - Do you run Windows, too?

If so, how?  Did you buy Windows or do you use parallel or another program?

I've been a faithful mac owner for 8 years now, we're in the market for a new desktop. I would buy a mac w/o hesitation, but unfortunately, I can't work from home on it because of a secure program that only runs on windows.

Our other macs couldn't support boot camp, but if we get a new one boot camp comes standard.

So does running windows on a mac really work?  Anything I should be concerned about?

  • I used the Boot Camp application that came with MAC OS and bought a copy of Windows to install.  Boot Camp basically partitions the drive and when you want to run Windows you just reboot the Mac to startup in Windows.  And yes, it really works.

  • I use VMWare Fusion. It's a program similar to Paralells. The advantage over using Bootcamp is that you can run windows without having to reboot. You just have it in a separate window on your mac. You do need a Windows installation CD to install the operating system in addition to the VMWare Fusion software. I would not make a partition on your harddrive, but install Windows as a .iso on the mac. This makes Windows slightly faster. Make sure you have a Mac with plenty of memory (4Gb minimum) to make sure both the Mac and Windows operating systems run fast.
