Flu Shot -yay or nay?

My school sent out an email about the flu shot. Now, I have never gotten one before and always fear that the year I do I'll be really sick.

I am already suffering from an intense head cold and wondering if this means that I'll be likely to get sick often this year or not.

Do you get the shot?

Re: Flu Shot -yay or nay?

  • Nope... the one time I got it (YEARS ago) I got sick....same thing with my husband...we'll never do it again.
  • I always get the flu shot...I work in healthcare and with the elderly.  You can never predict which flu you will be protected from, but it does lessen your chances.  And even though I have gotten the flu even with the vaccine...I am not going to take any chances.  The flu is serious and it should not be taken lightly.
  • I have for the past few years because I've either been pregnant or had a child under the age of one in the house - and in those cases it is recommended by the CDC.  Never had a problem with it.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to get it myself, this year since I'm not encouraged to...... I probably will.  Caroline will get it as it is recommended for children under 5, but I'm not sure how Jakob's recently diagnosed egg allergy will come into play for him....he may not be able to get it, in which case DH and I really should so that he at least does not get it from us if we happen to get it.

  • Uuuugh. I need to look into this. From the sounds of it, I may be in for my first one this year. Yuck.
  • Yeah, I am thinking I am in for my first one this year as well! I feel like the flu strands are getting more twisted and are worse on the human body as time goes on.
  • Everyone should consider getting the flu shot.  The actual shot is an inactive virus which will not make you sick.  If you get the flu mist, that does contain an active virus but it is very small and your chances of becoming infected are slim.  You also have to remember that it all depends on what the status of your immune system is at the time you get the vaccination.  If your system is already fighting something like a cold, you would be more susceptible to getting sick.   Your best to wait until you become healthy or healthier before getting the vacine.  The flu strands are becoming more dangerous each season and we all need to take steps to prevent us from getting sick and passing it on to others.  Remember good handwashing is the single best way to help prevent diseases and the spread of diseases!!  = )
  • I did last year for the first time, because I was pregnant and my OB said, "You're getting it ... pull up your sleeve."  Would I have gotten it otherwise?  I'd never had it before, so I doubt it.  But now that I've had it, I probably will get it every year (so thanks for the reminder!) ... I got a HORRIBLE cold this past February and another less-awful one in April ... but that was it.  I'm sure I would have gotten those colds anyway, with or without the shot ... so my thought is, get it ... what do you have to lose?
  • nicely put Maura...spoken like a true healthcare professional!
  • I've gotten one almost every year for probably the last 10 years..... I definitely think its well worth it.  Obviously being sick is no fun, so if there is something I can do to prevent it, I'm all for it!
  • I've never gotten it- even last year when I was pregnant. I'm just not a fan of it.
  • Maura took the words out of my mouth :-)

I always get one & will especially get one this year since I work in a school.  Owen is in the recommended age group, so he will be getting one.  Actually, he will proabably always get one b/c of his heart & likely asthma.

  • yes, every year. my uncle works for the who (world health organization) and he recommends it so i do it.

  • I never had, but I will be getting one this year.
