Applying for a job at Emory
I dont know what the etiquette on this board is for "outsiders" but I am applying for a teaching position at Emory and was wondering if you could help me with some information about the area? I grew up in St. Louis so I am not afraid of the weather, but I am newly single and looking for a safe, but interesting, young, hip area to live that would be affordable and easy to commute to Emory from. Obviously I dont know yet if I will even get an interview, but I wanted to get an idea of the area and the COL so that if I do get an interview I will know how much in salary to ask for etc.
Ideally, I would like to take public transportation to work. I prefer a relatively walkable community with some history to it. IE: I'm not really into strict suburb type areas.
And if there's anything else you think I should know, let me know

Sounds like most of the intown areas would be good for you. Decatur is very close to Emory and is on a MARTA train line. Downtown Decatur is very walkable. There are tons of cute shops and restaurants.
I'd also look into Virginia Highlands and Buckhead. As for affordable, Atlanta's housing and rental prices are very affordable compared to other big cities.

The job would be a "short term" position in my mind as it would be my first job following graduation with my PhD. Sort of like a post-doc. And since I prefer to work with students over cells, it seemed like an excellent solution for a traditional post doc, haha.

I'm late coming in here, but I'm a Ph.D. student at Emory and have lived in the area for several years. Sadly, Emory is not on the MARTA train line. If you want to ride public transportation into campus, there are MARTA buses or Cliff buses (this is Emory's bus system). Riding the bus to work is a good idea financially because parking on campus is $700/year. The post-docs in my department get free MARTA passes (IDK if this is department dependent), and the Cliff shuttle is always free.
As far as neighborhoods, you'll want to live within a few miles of campus to minimize your commute time. (If you live more than five miles from campus, you can count on a 30+ minute commute.) IMO, three neighborhoods stand out far above the rest: Virginia Highland, Candler Park, and downtown Decatur. These neighborhoods are all within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, and bars. As for transportation, the #16 MARTA bus goes through Virginia Highland, #6 goes through Candler Park, and the CCTMA Cliff shuttle goes through Decatur.

ETA: I would expect to pay $800-1000/month for a one bedroom apartment in one of these neighborhoods. Probably $1100-1300 for two bedrooms.
