moms - WDYT of this Christmas gift idea?

If you have kids, would you appreciate a family membership to the MN Zoo? The membership allows for free admission and free parking for an entire year (plus some special events and other various discounts).

Would your kids like that gift? Or would they think it's lame because they didn't get a bunch of packages to open on Christmas day and can't enjoy the gift instantly when they open it?

I'm trying to come up with a good gift idea for my brother & his boys (ages 6 & 9). They live in a fairly small apartment, and their home is already a little crowded, so I don't want to get them a bunch more "stuff" that they don't have space to store. My brother doesn't have a lot of extra money to spend on entertainment when the boys are with him, so I figured this gift could provide family entertainment for them multiple times during year.

Does that sound like a good gift?

If not - any other suggestions?

  • I think it would be great! To me, the zoo is so expensive, that we can't afford to take the girls (and we don't even have to pay for them). I'm sure 6 & 9 year olds would be a little bummed about not having things to open, but they will get over that pretty quickly, and they'll have lots of trips to the zoo in their future!

  • Personally, for the specifics you gave, it sounds like a nice idea! And the kids seem old enough to not scoff at the very thought of not getting gobs of gifts to open.

I guess my only hesitations would be these:

    - Where they live.... for us, if we got a gift like that, we'd be grateful for sure, don't get me wrong - but it's a haul for us to drive from the north suburbs to the way south suburbs to do that so we don't even get down there to the zoo even once a year. But if your brother and his kids are close to there, it's probably so worth it!

    - If they go often already.... if they never do it because they're not interested in that kind of thing, the gift might go unused. But if they go more than once a year, then it fits right into their lives already so it's perfect.

I love the idea of getting them the membership rather than more stuff to clutter an already-small space. It's great that you are thinking like that - we have people asking what our boys want for Christmas already and I'm already yelling in my head, "No more TOYS! GAH!" ;-)

I say Yes on the gift!

  • Maybe get a small stuffed monkey or some other animal found at the zoo?  That way they have something tangible to open and it correlates to the big part of your gift.

I think the zoo passes are a GREAT idea!!!

eta:  Oops, I'm not a mom.  My stuffed monkey idea still stands though :-)

  • I would love it :) but I might be a little 1 sided as we are going on our 2nd year with a membership.

edit - I would get the Family plus one as then they can bring 1 free guess each time. Also This is a great time to join the zoo as in the summer there will be a lot of fun new things

  • Great gift! We got one for my DS's 2nd birthday and we used it all the time. We live about 45 minutes away and we still managed to get there at least every 6 weeks or so. I am hoping that one set of grandparents will do that again for his birthday this year...especially with a new baby on the way.

  • Thanks, girls. I think I'll do it. And, the membership costs a bit less than what I would normally spend on separate gifts for the three of them, so I can find some small things to wrap up so the kids have some presents to open on Christmas. I'll see what creative zoo-related things I can find (like a stuffed monkey as Kiz suggested).

They live about 20-25 minutes from the zoo, so they don't have to drive too far. I live between their house and the zoo ... roughly halfway in between. They come to my house all the time with no complaints. If they can drive to my house just to see our dog, I think they can drive an additional 10 minutes to get to a huge zoo full of animals :-)

  • Great idea!  I have nephews about that age and they would love going to the zoo.

  • Honestly I would call your brother and find out if they all like the zoo.  The other options include The Children's Museum, The Science Museum... really awesome places they may use more if they're not that super into the zoo.
  • I'd love it if my kids got a membership to the zoo for a gift.  Nice choice!

A good "extra" gift/activity to go with that might be something from Build-a-Bear.  You can buy an un-stuffed animal to give and then they can go stuff them as a fun outing.  Rain Forest Cafe at the MOA sells different animals that you can bring in to Build-a-Bear for stuffing.

That is a great add on toy
