I pay ours with our second paycheck from the month before (we're both paid bi-weekly on the same schedule). For example, our November 1 mortgage payment was paid October 15 and our December 1 payment will be made November 26.
So it depends on our paycheck schedules, but never after the 1st. I don't care about the few extra pennies I'm losing in interest each month.

This. I LOVE auto pay.
This is exactly how we do it.
ETA: We also when splitting the two payments, we round up so we are paying more than half the payment each month.
