Class Rings - Input -

Hey ladies!

Soo I'm debating on getting a class ring at the moment. I'm scheduled to graduate (FINALLY) Dec of 2011, so I'd be ordering next semester I believe.

I was looking at the rings and the cheapest one starts at 400! I know it's my college ring, but that costs more than my wedding band (which I feel is of more importance) by 300.

So I was thinking. . what if I got a regular ring with maybe a ruby / onyx stone (ncsu colors) and just had an engraving done on the inside of the ring. The cost of this would be anywhere from 100-300, but I feel like I would wear it more than I would if it were the typical class ring.

Would this be weird? Does it make any sense?

I know this is a random post, but DH isn't here right now and I just wanted to 'talk'. . .I'm bored :o

Hope you're doing well!

Re: Class Rings - Input -

  • I never got a class ring for college...neither did DH.  Honestly we both got high school class rings and I have no idea where mine is.  If you're attached to the idea I'd say you should get a regular ring engraved just because we get no use out of our rings.
  • I got a college ring, but it's the one that doesn't actually look like a typical class ring. I wore it daily until about a year ago (seven years post graduation) and still wear it occasionally. It's similar to the Meredith rings if you've even seen those. It's silver with a black onyx. There's aren't any decals on the side, just the university seal stamped on the oxyn part.

  • I only got a HS ring, whereas DH did get a college ring.  I wore my HS ring every day--in high school--and then every once in awhile my Freshmen year of college.  But I haven't worn it since.

DH has worn his college ring very infrequently since he graduated--but mostly because he also has a masters and doctorate now from other schools.  He'll wear it whenever he goes back to Penn State--that happens once or twice a year, and he's worn it only one other time that I can remember.

I think a regular ring with your school stones might be more practical--on the other hand, I have a co-worker that wears her onyx/silver class ring every day--and she's 5+ years out of college as well.  If you REALLY want one to celebrate your accomplishments, then I don't think you can go wrong with either option.

  • I didn't get a college class ring. PP menioned Meridith's ring and I always though that it was a nice tradition that everyone had the same ring. I would have gotten one if my school had done something like that and would wear it regularly, but I knew if I just did a "pick my own" thing it would have been a waste of money.

If you just really want a ring to mark your graduation I'd go with a ring in NCSU colors like you said. You'd probably get a lot more use out of something like that.

  • I got a class ring from HS and undergrad.  I wear my college ring every day (6 years post graduation).  I think I wear it out of habit since I obv. like it, but I don't love it.  I'm graduating in Dec with my graduate degree and I'm not going to get a class ring.  But I do like your idea about getting jewelry with the school colors.  I go to ECU so I could get a purple stone (also my birthstone) with yellow gold, which would be my preference anyway.  I actually really like this idea since I'd definitely get more use out of that than another class ring!  I say go with whatever you think you'd wear more!
  • I got a college ring but I never wear it anymore. I like your idea of creating something non-traditional and having it engraved. I think you will get much more wear out of that than something that looks like the typical class ring. GL choosing!
  • Awesome! Thank you for your input :o)

I will probably go with making my own as I do feel like I'd wear it more and could get something a little more my own style. NCSU does the onyx rectangle ring, but I feel like it'd be a bit big for me.

I appreciate all the advice / opinions. I feel more re-assured that I'm not crazy for wanting to step out of the box a little plus save a little cash :o)

  • Mine is something like the smaller rings here that don't have stones, it has the Duke D on it with my degree on one side and year of graduation on the other. I used to wear it more often, I wear it infrequently now but I still really like it.

  • I have a high school class ring and a college one. I wore the HS ring every day until I got my college one, then wore the college one everyday until I got married.  It didn' t look like a typical class ring though.

  • Hey Beka! *waves*

I got an NCSU class ring, but I got the smaller style.  I wear it everyday, and I got it almost 3 years ago.  I do have a friend that did something similar to your idea.  She got a simple gold ring with a ruby.  She wears it every day.  So if you want a ring, I think you should get whatever style you think you'd be most likely to wear.

Just a couple of extra thoughts...I know some people that have gotten the dinner style rings (the black rectangle with the block S I think) to wear on special occasions.  And I've heard that some employers look at whether or not someone wears a college class ring to job interviews because they take it as showing that you take pride in your school and value the education you got from there.

Didnt even think about that! Thats an interesting thought. Will say though, if I go with an actual class ring from school, it'll be like the one you have :o)

  • I lost my high school ring before I even graduated. Despite this I decided to get one for undergrad. I used to wear it, but I never where it anymore. DH did use it try and estimate my ring size for my engagement ring. Really that is the only way it has been used the past 6 years.

Will you be upset if you spend money and then do not wear it? If so, I would skip it.
