Theme of your christmas tree?

Hello! This is FI and I's second christmas at our apartment. I decorated our christmas tree last year and i felt like it was such a mess! What is your theme? i just had all random ornaments! I just want a pretty one this year! Pictures would be helpful!!!! lol

Re: Theme of your christmas tree?

  • Ours is decorated in dark reds and antiqued metal ornaments.  It's still a work in progress.  The first few years, we just bought enough super cheap ornaments in that general color scheme to cover the tree and now we're slowly swapping them out for nicer ornaments but staying in the same theme.
  • Last year was our first Christmas together and the ornaments that he had before were okay but really out dated and just not my taste. So last year we went out and got all new ornaments. We did a blue theme with white lights. We have 3 different shades of blue. It is really pretty and I think classic. We also had a tree in our room that I had at my parents house. It is just a small 4ft tree and had pink lights with silver ornaments. Very girly.

  • Red and gold....mostly on clearance at Hobby Lobby after Christmas last year :)

There are two different shades of each color, and only half of them are shiny while half are more "frosted".  A couple small boxes also have muted designs in the colors.

I like it, but I know that there will be a few misc ornaments that are sentemental and will still go up.  (When we have kids, there will be a family tree, as well as a "moms-designer-tree", because I love decorating :)

  • Right now I have a mess of different ornaments because it was always like that growing up (not so much a "mess" but no theme - just all different stuff). I continued to have different kinds of ornaments on my tree at the apartment but now that H and I are in the house I want to change up our tree. I'm thinking blue, white and silver ornaments wtih clear lights and strands of silver beads instead of garland.

  • Wal-mart has huge sections of ornaments and decorations by color that if you picked two or three, would make it look nice.

Menards also has trees decorated in theme's that might give you an idea. Candy, Country, Snowman ...

We did a red/gold (our college's colors) our first year and then bought greens and blues to add the year after. Once we got married my mom handed me my box of all my ornaments from growing up so now it doesn't have a theme anymore :( . The theme is Becky's life by her Christmas ornaments!

That's how our little tree was growing up. We'd have the big tree in the front room window and the "kids tree" upstairs in the landing. My mom had a set of ornaments for it, plus all the stuff my sister and I made in art class when we were in grade school. It took a LONG time, but I finally broke her of it and she only kept the best ones....and even with my sister and me married and out of the house she still has the little tree in the landing upstairs. My SD comes over and decorates it.  :)

  • This year I am going to do teal with metallics (gold, bronze, silver, etc.) Last year mine was a little hodge-podgy but I don't mind it that way because that's how the tree always was at home. I am going to be using a lot of flowers/berries/sparkly picks this year. I got them at Hobby Lobby last year and they really fill the tree out. Good Luck!
  • We dont have a theme, but more a color scheme of red, silver, and clear.  I bought a big thing of red and silver ornaments at Target one year for under $20, I think it had 75 ornaments.  The ornaments weren't of great quality (plastic) but that worked out well because if they hit our hardwood floor (probably from our dog wagging her tail), they didn't break, and you really didn't know they were plastic unless you looked really close.  I have been collecting nicer ones over the years, but I make sure to put those towards the top so they don't get knocked off.  Here is a PIP or our tree to give you an idea (sorry for bad pic quality):

  • My DH has two little girls from a previous marriage, so our theme is Christmas crafts from the kiddies and us.

  • No real theme for ours... we get an ornament everywhere we go on vacations, other fun things we did as a family, plus some that are milestones (first married Christmas, baby's first Christmas, etc.), and a few that are just for fun (DH has a beer stein ornament because he brews beer, we both grew up around boats so we have several nautical ornaments).

It's basically lots of memories and symbols of things that make us happy.

ETA:  I also collect star ornaments- glass, wood, metal, etc. so those are kind of the filler rather than the typical glass balls.

  • Our theme is "Christmas."  I don't go for the trees that look like they're in a department store window.  Our trees are always beautiful and full of colorful lights and ornaments from places we've been, from our childhood, gifts from friends and family, and whatever else we find that we like.
  • We have two trees.  One has white lights w/red, white, and silver ornaments and the other has multicolored lights w/all kinds of ornaments (our childhood ornaments and random ones).

  • This year, we bought a winterberries/twig looking garland set...  so it's very earthy with red & white berries and brown vines/twigs... we're going to put them on the tree- then we just do the standard ho dge-podge of ornanments.  We select a light theme- we have 2 sets:  a set of clear lights, and a set of colored bulbs... last year we did the colored ones, so we may just do the clear ones this year.

  • Great post, I was just thinking how to redecorate our tree.  For the past three years I've done all silver and a ton, I mean a ton of lights.  It is awesome, but this year I'm craving something more colorful.  Great ideas ladies.

  • My aunt always puts a tree in each room.  I am excited to implement this tradition as well.  I am in the process of planning.

Since I moved out on my own I have used a little silver tree with pink decorations.  I am going to put this up in my dining room.

I have a little tree that I am going to place in the kitchen with cows on it.  I grew up on a dairy farm and have many of these ornaments and a cow themed kitchen.

I have a Charlie Brown tree I am going to put in our bathroom.

Our family room theme is going to be the ornaments we have picked up from vacation.  I am trying to decide how to fashion a globe into a topper.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am going to do a large tree in the living room that is going to be brown, gold, and bronze themed.  Anyone seen any brown and or gold lights?

I am going to put our childhood ornaments on a tree with colored lights on the porch.  I love the big fat old fashioned bulbs.  My mom always buys each of us an ornament every year.  She also passed along several from our grandparents.

I am going to scope out ideas and hopefully shop after Christmas sales for the rest of our rooms for next year.  I hope I get more themed ideas from this post.

  • Living at the beach, we always do our tree in a beachy theme (but with a few old handmade ornaments from childhood). We hang white lights with white starfish and sand dollars. It is gorgeous when it's finished :-)
    Photobucket
  • We do an Advent Tree with purple lights and purple ribbon, no ornaments, until Christmas Eve.  Then we pull out the white lights and mess of unmatched ornaments from growing up and gifts to cover the tree in a festive, bright way.  I love seeing the memories more than a matching "theme."
  • Ours this year is going to be Silver and Gold (but not the yellowy gold) .

I also have another small tree that is only Snoopy ornaments.

  • Ours is done in red, antique white and black. We have wooden bead garland in the white and red and then a big mix of ornaments in those colors, most of them wooden. Lots of them are also word-oriented, either they are a metal/wooden word or they have words/lyrics written on them.

I thought maybe I needed to see someone for a psych eval when I said I wanted black Christmas ornaments : ) But they were actually pretty easy to find - we got a lot of them are Gordmans.
