I've been meaning to ask you since you are a yoga instructor what you you recommend a beginner to take. My cousin, who lives in another town, does hot yoga and loves it. She was also a beginner but for some reason hot yoga scares me a little.

  • Hot Yoga (Bikram) is actually a fine place to start because generally the classes are run the same way each time.  I understand the intimidation of the heat and sweating though... especially when it's new.

A lot of studios and gyms will use Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced to describe their classes so that makes it easy.  If not, Hatha is usually a good place to start and will generally be very slow and gentle.  Stay away from Ashtanga or Power Yoga until you get the hang of it... these classes are very demanding.

Hopefully this helps!  When in doubt, ask the studio or instructor what they would advise for a beginner.  Let me know if you have any other questions!  Smile

  • Butting in--Hot yoga is a lot less scary than it sounds, especially bikram.  You do the same 26 poses every time, so you know exactly what to expect and can set goals for each class.  Every pose has modifications for beginners, where you're still getting the benefit of the pose, even if you're not in the fullest expression.

Give it a try.  You might surprise yourself!  I LOVE hot yoga and try to practice about 3 times a week.

  • Thanks to both of you. I think my biggest intimidation with hot yoga, and this is going to sound ridiculous, is I am bad with sweat. LIke I am ok with my own but when I see it on someone else it makes me gag. I'm such a wimp. I really, really want to try it though.

What do you wear, shorts and a tank?

  • One of the things I really like about it is that holding the poses takes so much focus that you're really not concerned with what everyone else is doing (or how much they're sweating).  It's great for getting out of your own head after work.

I usually wear a tank top and either shorts or light yoga pants.
