Anyone really into it? I can't get into it at all.. if you're going to have two dudes fighting, why not have them go all out, right? Isn't the point system kind of subjective?
Maybe I just don't know a lot of about it.
Re: Boxing.
I love it. I like it better than MMA. The point system is very subjective and the governing bodies have long been accused of corruption and favoritism.
That being said, as a Filipina, I have to root for the country's national pride, and am hoping that Pacquiao lives up to his nickname of The Mexecutioner.
If you have HBO, watch the 24/7 series for the boxers. Like any sport, when you watch the behind the scenes, see their background, how they train, you have a much greater appreciation about who they are and where they come from.
I kind of like him. He's into politics right? Didn't he get elected to something over there? (Shows how much I actually pay attention to boxing.
)
He just got elected as a Congressman for his state in the Philippines.
Even if I weren't Filipina, I'd still like him. He's always smiling and loves karaoke, which is just hilarious. The man can't sing worth a damn and he's got 2 albums. There was a "60 Minutes" story on him last weekend, and the the reported said that when Pacquiao fights, the crime rate literally drops to 0%. It's crazy.
That's awesome.
I never got into it... I'm pretty squeamish, though, I don't think I could handle it. I can barely look when I see a gnarly injury in the sports I'm into... man. I couldn't deal with constant blows to the face.
Although, I just heard a short piece on boxing on my local sports talk radio station. Was there some dude that put weights in his gloves recently?! That is abhorrent!

Perfect love drives out fear.
It was in regards to this last weekend's big fight, Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito. Margarito was banned from boxing in early 2009 because there was plaster found in his gloves when he fought Shane Mosely. This fight was supposed to "reaffirm" him in the boxing community because he was banned for a year and the only state to re-license him was Texas.
But it didn't really work because Pacquiao just destroyed him and literally broke his face. ESPN reported that Margarito is having surgery on Tuesday to repair his orbital bones (the bones around his eyes) because they broke during the fight.
I enjoy watching boxing and have it in my blood. My father, uncles, and grandfathers have boxed and trained professionally. I've grown up watching my family in the sport and even sparred myself.
It's hard to explain why the fascination. The sport takes a lot of discipline. The emotions do take over you and you just want to beat the living sh!t out of the people by any means, but you have to learn to control yourself and throw clean punches and conserve your energy throughout the match. This comes from years of training.
It's not easy to get a KO or TKO so a point system has been established. Like pp mentioned, the system is flawed and has its corruption, but it's necessary. If you watch a bout with two very equal fighters, you will notice by the end of the twelve rounds both fighters are exhausted and leaning on each other, barely throwing punches. This is why a point system is created. To be able to really differentiate between the two and declare a winner.
