Potted ivy outdoors in winter?

I would like to dress up my exterior entryway, which is completely shaded.  I'm thinking ivy in a small pot, but is it too late?  Would it survive the winter?  If not, do I have any other options?

Re: Potted ivy outdoors in winter?

  • Are you going to give the ivy somewhere to climb?  Otherwise, it will just sprawl all over your entryway (eventually).  I don't see an inherent problem with ivy in a pot over the winter.  I have a pot of ivy I'm training up a pyramid.

In fact, ivy in a pot is the *only* way I'd recommend it.  It's rather invasive.

Personally, though, I prefer a pot of pansies or violas in the winter.  They just make me smile and will survive being buried under snow.
