e-books

Where do you buy e-books from? I have an ipad but I can download the kindle app on it if I get books from Amazon... are there any other sites that sell the books cheaper though???

Re: e-books

  • Have you downloaded the iBooks app?  In a very few cases, I've found certain titles to be cheaper in the iBooks store compared to the Kindle store.  If you're dead-set on comparison shopping, you could also get the Barnes & Noble and Borders apps and check the price at their stores as well.

The only other place I know of that sells ebooks cheaper is O'Reilly's website, which sells digital versions of their technical computing books.  They have a "deal of the day" which we've taken advantage of at least a dozen times to buy computer books for a decent discount.

  • Thanks.... I have ibooks, nook and kindle on my ipad... I will just look at them and see which is cheaper. I found one book $4 cheaper on kindle than ibooks which I thought was odd but oh well. I'm not dead set on using any exclusively so I will just comparison shop within them. Since I am new to it I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some shop that sold them cheaper! :-) Thanks for you advice though!! much appreciated!

  • One word of advice:  If there's a version on the Kindle store that's a lot cheaper than iBooks, etc. or even compared to other editions on the Kindle store, take a look at some of the critical reviews on Amazon.  I recently bought a Kindle copy of The Plague by Albert Camus, because it was 99 cents compared to $4 on iBooks.  It turns out that there were countless typographic errors, which sometimes made it hard to read.  I went back to mention this in an Amazon review and found there was already a similar review.  It turns out the digital publisher had also removed the chapter markings and had changed some of the punctuation, which altered the way the text was emphasized.  As the reviewer put it, "Sometimes you get what you pay for."
