Tilling the garden under before winter??
After you have cleared out your garden when everything is done growing and dead, are you supposed to till it all under before the ground freezes?? This was our first year for a garden and my husband says no, and I would like to. if we had our own tiller it wouldn't be such an issue, but we would have to rent one for about an hr to get it done.

Personally, I have raised beds so tilling would be difficult to do in the first place.
However, if I didn't, I probably still wouldn't till unless I was using a cover crop or something. Tilling breaks up the soil structure and excessive tilling isn't really good for your soil.
Just pull up the dead plants and, if you really want everything to be ready for spring, add some compost.
I tilled mine. My dad said it would be good to stir up pest eggs and add oxygen to the soil. I put dried cow manure and compost on before it was tilled.
I didn't do any of my own research about tilling, I'm just trusting my dad. He tills every fall and spring. Is this too much? Maybe I will start tilling just once.
