Need help with grab bag ideas!

DH's family is about 20 people, ages 18-85.  We do a grab bag, and I'm looking for different ideas this year to do it!?!  This year's limit is $25. Here's what we've done in the past:

-  pull names out of a hat. we would write 3 items we wanted on the paper, or call their spouse for ideas.  This wasn't that great because it wasn't a surprise & people would throw names back in the hat if they didn't want to buy for 'a hard person'.

- all ladies buy a general gift for a lady.  All guys buy a general gift for a guy. We put them in two separate piles in the middle of the room....
          - One year we played 'guess the christmas song' game - someone sang a line & whoever shouted out the correct answer got to choose a gift from the pile. Do not open.  The next person to guess the correct answer could steal someone else's unopened gift, or choose a new one.  Then we all opened our gifts at the same time at the end.
          - Another year we picked numbers out of hat & that determined our gift choosing order. #1 opened their gift. #2 could see previously opened gifts & either choose to steal, or choose a new gift from the guy/girl pile.

Re: Need help with grab bag ideas!

  • The dice game comes to mind - if you roll pairs you grab a gift or steal someone else's gift.

Or, you could partner up and the girls could choose gifts for the guys & vice versa.

  • I would do a small bottle of perfume.  The competition was fierce over perfume at my family holiday party last year.  Also booze, but I see that you're pregnant and that could probably raise a few eyebrows at the liquor store. ;)
  • My family plays a game every year with a story like this.  When the word "right" or "left" is said during the story, you pass the bag you're holding.  When the story is over, whatever bag you end up with is your prize.  There are tons of stories online, my mom finds a different one every year.

  • Our Family does a grab bag every year too. I always have trouble coming up with gift ideas for it though. Our limit is also $25.

When it comes time to open the gifts everyone gets two cards. We have someone calling out the cards. If your card is called that person can either steel an opened present that someone else has opened or take one from the pile. Once your second card is called that is your last change to either trade your opened present for one that is still unopened in the center or steel someone else's gift. Once your out of cards, then you don't get to steel or trade gifts.

If anyone else has ideas on gifts for grab bags (my family has mostly done booze or gift cards which seem to go over well, but I would like to do something different) Please let me know!
