Burt's Bees - EF or not?

Is Burt's Bees a green company?  I like a lot of their products so I wanted to ask to see.  :-)

Thanks!

Re: Burt's Bees - EF or not?

  • Its owned by Clorox, but I think the consensus has been that the division has maintained its moderate greenness, and thanks to Burt's Bees Clorox has done some good things (like for frogs), and that its availability and high profile are good.

I use Burt's Bees shampoo. Its what works for my hair, after some fairly disastrous attempts with other products -- and before going 'green' shampoo, I had NO problems with switching brands.

Ideally I prefer using smaller companies, and more 'purely' green companies, but I don't think Burt's Bees is the devil (that's Monsanto! Big Smile)

  • At the holistic pet health seminar I went to a couple weekends ago the vet who led it said that Monsanto genetically modifies all of its seeds just enough to be able to patent them.  If they find one of THEIR seeds growing in your feed (even if something pollenates in the wind...) you can be sued!  Scary!  She is a firm believer about using things in their natural states and not modifying anything.  Our bodies were made to process natural things.

I cannot say it enough how glad I am I went to that seminar...

Thanks for the info on Burt's Bees!  I figured it wasn't 100% squeaky green but that it's not awful either.  I'm on day three of trying their shampoo and I like it so far.  I'm not loving how my hair looks cut-wise but that's because I'm way overdue for a cut.  The texture and cleanliness of my hair is great with the B.B.  :-)

  • Monsanto is pretty much evil.
  • Do you guys find BB to be expensive in the US? It is hella expensive up here. Like $20 for a small shampoo.

Yeah, it's pretty pricey here, too.  I just paid $8 for a bottle of shampoo.  Not a total bank breaker, but more than I'd like to spend for shampoo.

  • It does well in the hazard ratings on Cosmeticdatabase.com It does better than Origins and Aveda in most cases.

I paid $7.99 each for sham/cond at Target.  They each came with a small sample of something else though so that helps.  I love samples.  :-)

I try to use less than I was accustomed to.  I have short hair but would squirt a massive amount of sham/cond in my hand.  It's a bad habit I'm trying to break.  :-)

  • So true about Monsanto and all other big ag companies. I am involved with agriculture and I will be staritng my own natrual meat coop, where animals are humanely raised, and no hormones or drugs will be used unless the animal is really sick and needs help. Would you all ever be interesed in something like this? I want to empower the customer and allow them to see and understand how their animal is raised. Trust me while getting my animal science degree I had the chance to visit some confinement operations and they are depressing and in humane, especially commerical pork and poultry. Not to mention confienment animal operations contribute to most the worlds green house gases. I am excited and hopefully by biz idea takes off the ground. But what are your opnions on the idea?

In Canada (if that's where you're from) it was just on sale at London drugs for super cheap. It was around $5.99 for their 12 oz. stuff. I usually keep my eyes open for it to go on sale, then I stock up.

  • Strictly speaking, Burt's Bees is better than the generic alternative but it is a far cry from the best. Their packaging is pretty heinous and their excuses for using so much extra plastic were nil. When I inquired about why they had three sets of plastic wrap on a single stick of lipchap their representative merely told me "well we're not allowed to drink Tim Horton's".
I stick to buying their sample packs, less packaging, lasts much longer.
    Their prices are ridiculous though.
  • BB does get pretty pricey, and is usually in a smaller container, so you probably get less for your money. I have not tried their shampoo, after reading these posts I think that I will. But I do use some of their other products, like lip gloss and face wash, etc.. Rite Aid usually has good sales that include BB products, I try to hold out on buying them until there is a sale.
