Poll: Rivalries

I was listening to our local sports radio today, and the guys brought up an interesting question.

If your team's having a bad year [doesn't have a stellar record, not living up to expectations etc.], would it make your season as a fan if your team beat its rival team?  If your rival team was doing awesome, would it make it even that much better if your team could crush them?

OR, do you feel that way every year, regardless of record - a season isn't a season if you can't beat your rival?

Re: Poll: Rivalries

  • Being an OSU fan, we're always happy to beat OU since they're usually way better than us, and it's traditionally an upset if we can beat them. Of course, history shows that beating OU doesn't happen very often, so I'm just happy if we don't get creamed [like the 27-0 pounding last year].

This year, though...the tides are turned. If we can win out, we're going to the Big 12 championship - and, of course, we have to beat OU to get there. Being used to losing to OU, I'm not sure we'll be able to beat them this year - honestly, I don't think we'll beat them. But if we do, I don't care about anything else...it's been so long since we've beat OU that I'd be perfectly content just celebrating that victory and going home. Who cares about the Big 12 or the BCS? We would've beaten OU for the first time since what, 2002?

I know not all OSU fans feel that way, but I do - if we beat OU, it'll make my life as an OSU fan.

  • I think, regardless of what your team's record is, it always puts a smile on your face when you can beat your rival. Always.

In my case, which I've been told is total anti-Oklahoman, I'm always happy to see OU get beat. It doesn't matter if OSU does it, Texas does it, Colorado, or whoever - when they get beat, I get happy. I know it's so wrong not to root for a state school... but frankly, I don't care. My argument is this: everyone has a school/coach/team they hate, right? Mine just happens to be in-state.

  • As a Pitt fan, I don't care if we win every game or no games, we want to beat West Virginia. Nothing matters like the Backyard Brawl.

Of course, if Pitt football could actually be good one of these years it might not matter as much Smile

  • Most definitely.  My Gators are teh suck this year, but we've beaten Georgia and Tennessee.  If the planets align such that we somehow beat FSU at Doak Campbell on 11/27, I won't consider the season a total loss...

...But I really don't see us beating FSU.  He!!, I don't think we can score enough to beat Appy State.  Crying

I am writing mine before I read Gator_Esq's post to see if we agree, lol.

I hate having a bad season (ie: not getting to the SEC championship). Hate it. Hate. But, if we beat Tennessee, Georgia and FSU I can live with it. If we don't win those games, I am seriously grumpy until the next season.

Not surprised that we totally agree here.  I am SUPER worried about the FSU game. I made a bet with a guy at work and I do NOT want to have to wear an FSU shirt. Ugh.

  • It's always great to be an Auburn Tiger no matter what our record is, but beating Alabama is what matters.

This state is crazy about college football and living in Birmingham where Bama fans out number Auburn fans is not only a pain but if we lose to them, we can't go anywhere without hearing how they beat us..it's pretty obnoxious.

My friend always says that he would rather see us have a losing record than lose to bama, and I concur

My grandmother was an Auburn fan. My mother was out playing with her siblings during the Bama game when she was young and broke her arm. Of course my grandmother told her she had to wait until the game was over to go to the hospital and handed her some ice. lol.

  • It wouldn't make up for a craptastic season, but certainly beating our rival would make it better.  But record certainly accounts for a lot.  For example, in college basketball, I would rather my alma mater (Marquette) lose to Wisconsin (in state rival) or Notre Dame (conference rival) during the regular season and end up going to the Final Four because a run to the Final Four is just special.

  • I am one of those people (like PP) that wants to see their rival always lose. When my team can do it, awesome! However, nothing tilts me more than WVU getting beat by Pitt. Especially what 3-4 years ago when they beat us in the craptastic sub 10 point game in a blizzard that took a National Championship game away. I was in school during Nielans final years (when the team SUCKED!) and nothing was worse than the amazing season we had, one a BCS bowl, but lost one game to Pitt. It ruined the whole season for me.

Wait a second.... you would rather beat Pitt and not go to a BCS bowl?  Did I read that right?  Really?  I know football is different from basketball, but I would rather do well post-season (a bowl game or a deep run in the NCAA tourney) than beat them during the regular season.  It's a measure of a team's success.

  • Michigan hasn't done good the last few years under Rich Rod, but to beat Ohio State no matter what our record, would be great!

Of course I'm always happy when someone else beats Ohio State, but I did root for them in the National Championship game when they played Miami.  that divided some people: some said 'no way" would they ever root for Ohio State, yet some were like me & had to root for the Big 10 conference.  Even today on the sports talk there was division.  Many Michigan State fans will not root for Michigan this weekend against Wisconsin, even though if Michigan can win, it will help Michigan State go to a BCS game instead of Wisconsin.  I just don't get some people.  I'd want me team to go, and if I had to root for my rival, I would.

  • Wow, you girls really like your college football. Stick out tongue

I think it's a little different in my sport of choice, MLB.  Because you're NOT going to beat your rival if you're having a bad season.  You play them too many times, and obviously if they're better, they're gonna come out on top.  I'll still celebrate a little when I see Minnesota lose ANY game, though.  Not just against me.

However, it's always a nice consolation prize to win the Crosstown.  Sure, I may finish third behind Minnesota and Detroit.... but at least we beat the f-ing Cubs.

See, my H is a HUGE GT fan. As was his father, and his father, etc. When FIL married a UGA grad, well... it made football season a little awkward. ;)

  • The UK/Louisville basketball game is a special time in this state.  If anyone watched that game last year, you know that no one (players, coaches, fans) plays around when it comes to that game.  It's pretty important to win that game because of the quality of both teams.  Football, not so much because both teams are turrible.

Murray State has 3 teams that are considered rivals.  It's a serious day when we play Western Kentucky, Autsin Peay, and Morehead State.  All of them are in-state, Austin Peay and Morehead are in-conference, but those are always games that can go either way and bring the biggest crowds.

    I love rivalries.

Actually, if you went to SpartanTailgate.com, the State message board, you'd find quite the opposite.

I grew up Green, went to Marquette (where we were coached by a Spartan), and would love nothing more than seeing Bucky get beat by DickRod.  I've already got my plan lined up for SoCal, so I'm hoping we go to Pasadena!

I guess that came out wrong...it was an amazing season, the guys deserved a ton of credit, but no one talks about how we beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, they only talk about how we could have gone to the championship game if we had beat Pitt. It just makes it burn that much more.

  • Falmingemu - I see what you mean about beating OU in the Fiesta Bowl, but no one remembers. That sucks.

In terms of college sports, I think our only real rival is OU...so if we beat them in any sport, it's a big deal [but not as big as if we beat them in football, since that NEVER happens]. With NBA, I'm a Mavs and Thunder fan. The Thunder don't really have a rival just yet...we'll see how the season plays out.

With the Mavs, if they don't beat the Spurs, it makes me mad. I don't like the Spurs, at all [sorry spurs fans]. With MLB, I'm a BoSox fan [and Giants, but I don't really claim that yet since I didn't start liking them until this past season, pre-championship]. They gotta beat the Yanks.

    Yes

While I agree with the above statement I will take a loss to Carolina if it means Duke wins the NCAA tourney.  I can forget one regular season loss pretty easily if we win the ACC regular season, the ACC tourney and the NCAA tourney.

It is always fun to beat Carolina. If we are having a down year and we beat them it is nice to say at least we beat UNC. However I do not think the goal of any season is to beat Carolina. It is to win titles.
