Serving a soup course

I have a soup course planned for a dinner party for 10.  I can have it warming in a crockpot but is there really a good way to transport it from the kitchen to the dining room?  Everything else is family style but I nixed the idea of soup in a serving bowl or tureen because I just imagined it going all over everything and everyone as each person ladled.  Right now, the only thing I can think of is for DH or a friend to help me bring individual bowls out two at a time, meaning we'd have to make a few trips.  Does that seem awkward?

Re: Serving a soup course

  • What about a tray you can carry them in with?  Or put the crock pot/tureen on a side board and ladle in the dining room?  Or serve in a different vessel that you could carry more than one at a time (like coffee mugs)?
  • A glass (or other non plastic material) pitcher.  That's how many restaurants do it (albeit small pitchers).  If you want to be extra fancy, put the add-ons (croutons, chicken pieces, whatever is right for your soup) in everyone's bowl and bring to the table.  Then pour the soup for each person in front of them.
  • It has mushrooms and dumplings so pouring might cause a lot of splashing--but I'll keep that idea in my back pocket for a smoother soup, I like it.

I think a tray might work the best.  We have one that could hold about 6 bowls so trips with just me traveling back and forth once would be the least hectic way.

    Thanks!

  • I use a tureen, but I walk it around the table so each person can serve themselves.  I haven't had any accidents that way.

  • i had a dinner party for 8 last week, and we carried the bowl out. i made the mistake of having my soup ready too soon, and left it simmering too long. it scorched a little. the crockpot on warm sounds like a good idea.
  • We have matzoh ball soup at every holiday, and we always bring them in 2 at a time with a plate under the bowl to make it easier to carry.
