Honeymoon-ing in Jamaica!!!

Hi All,

Its been about a week since I was on here...I am not very good about this, but trying to get better :)

The new husb & I are FINALLY (we got married in Oct) taking our honeymoon. Our travel agent is setting us up for a trip to Sandals Grande Ocho Rios in early December!!!! I was reading some reviews and for the most part they are good, but the bad ones are pretty bad. So I am a little scared. We have not travelled anywhere out of the country (besides Mexico, which I dont really count) so I want our first trip to be awesome - not to mention its our honeymoon!!!

After reading a few bad reviews, I started looking at other resorts in Jamaica & I found that Secrets has an all inclusive resort too called Secrets Wild Orchid which is in Montego Bay. They have a lot of good reviews but by reading some of the reviews, I think it might be a newer resort. It is only 15 mins from the airport (Sandals is about 90 mins away) which I can't decide if that is a good or bad thing...

I am so torn & I dont know which resort to go to. Does anyone have any advice here?!?! Have you travelled to Jamaica? Any suggestions?!

Thanks in advance Ladies!! :)

Re: Honeymoon-ing in Jamaica!!!

  • My husband and I honeymooned in Montego Bay. We stayed at Sandals. We had an amazing time and have no complaints. So while I can't personally speak for Sandals Ochos Rios, we had an amazing experience with Sandals. I've only heard great things about Ochos Rios. I personally wouldn't change your trip. I think you will have a wonderful time! I know we did! Congrat and have fun!
  • we spent most of our honeymoon at a sandals resort in nassau, bahamas. i have absolutely no complaints about them at all. amazing service, great food, they even gave us an ocean view room.

a big hurricane came through jamaica right before our honeymoon and they moved most of the people from jamaica to the resort in the bahamas, so the rooms were overbooked our first night we got there. they put us up in a super nice hotel right next door to the resort, but gave us access to use all of their amenities until our room was ready the next day. they also refunded that night back to me.

oh, and they always have warm, fresh baked cookies. mmmm.

i've heard good things about their jamaica resort

  • DH and I honeymooned in Jamaica in March this year.  We had a great time, we went with Couples-Ocho Rios instead of Sandals and had a blast.  The list of "all inclusives" seemed pretty similar between the two but the cost was lower and fit our budget better, plus they included horseback riding which I really wanted to do.  It was an amazing trip I say go for it and have fun! I can't wait to go back in a few years and try out some more of the all inclusive resorts.  Have a great time! and congrats on your wedding.

  • I have been to Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica and I loved it.  I love Jamaica as an island and I plan to go back. I have no complaints about Sandals either.  Next time we want to do another side of the island.

  • My husband and I stayed at Sandals Grande in Ocho Rios and WE LOVED IT. What an amazing trip. I really haven?t read the reviews but from my own experience I would recommend it!

  • we went to Couples Negril! WE WERE IN LOVE! I think about it all the time and hope to go back soon.  I hate it when people "trash" a destination. Basically the people that end up telling you how "bad" a place is, have never even been there.  it's like saying don't visit America because it has crime. Really people? Sorry... this gets me going...

our package included sooooooo much! we even went scuba diving. one of the best experiences of my life. the staff was amazing and i'd go back in a heartbeat.

we never felt the need to leave the resort for shopping and stuff because the "retailers" would actually come set up shop on the beach so we got suveniers that way.  we did actually leave the resort one time to go to Couples Swept Away. Our travel agent had sent a driver to pick us up and go there to celebrate their 8 year anniversary. it was so much fun.

  • I wouldn't stay in Montego Bay, personally.  If you plan on only staying at the resort the entire time, then maybe.  I haven't stayed at any of the Sandals resorts, but I have stayed at another resort in Runaway Bay (just before Ocho Rios) and loved it.  You've got Dunn's River Falls really close, and lots of different shopping/markets.  If you were to stay in Montego Bay, most of the sight seeing destinations are a good ways away.  I'd rather travel far once, and be done, then spend all day on the crazy roads in Jamaica getting to & from places.  But, that's just me.

I love Jamaica!  I've been there a few times, and love more each time.
