PSA: Holiday Shopping Safety

There was something on the news last week about a woman getting her purse stolen in a shopping center parking lot (could have been the mall, I don't remember).  The news reporter said women should keep their keys and cell phone in their pocket so in case someone does take your purse you still have them.  I always have my keys out and in my hand before I ever go outside if it's dark, but my cell phone is usually buried in the bottom of my purse.  I thought this was good advice to pass onto ya'll.

  • Guess I'll be wearing jeans and/or jackets with pockets when I go out. Thanks for that tip!

  • Thanks for the info! I usually have my keys in my hand too. I forget about my cell phone though.
  • When I was in high school (mid 90's) someone tried to snatch my purse in the parking lot of the Target on SW 44th & Western in OKC.  It was Christmastime, and I had just gone in to Target to get something for my grandpa for Christmas (he liked those weird different flavored jellies - lol)

Anyway, when I was leaving, it was dark and I was walking to my car.  I noticed someone who looked familar (my 2nd cousin) across the parking lot, and was being nosey and trying to see what kind of new car she was getting in to.  lol

Anyway, I wasn't paying enough attention and all of a sudden I had this feeling that there was something really close to me!  I looked down and there was a car bumper just INCHES from my leg.  And then all of a sudden the car sped up and someone hung out the passenger window and grabbed my purse!  It all happened so fast.  I tripped and went flying across the pavement, my glasses flew off, and I was cussing a blue streak!  By the time I got to my feet, they were long gone, but there was my purse, broken strap and all, laying there in front of me.  THANK GOD!

Some old man helped me into the store and we got the security guard and the cops came out.  They said there had been 4 other instances of that happening THAT NIGHT.  One was at the Sears right across the street, 2 were at Crossroads mall, and 1 was at the old Service Merchandise on I240.

It was SO scary.  And let me tell you, 15 years later, I still think about it every time I'm somewhere shopping by myself even if it's not dark outside.

So, my biggest pieces of advice are to stay aware of your surroundings, and keep your phone and your keys handy.  Though, my phone probably would have been broken into pieces, the way I feel and flew across the cement.

Oh, and always walk with your purse side toward the line of parked cars, not with your purse out toward the traffic.

  • Good advice! Someone told me to carry my keys between my fingers (like freddy krueger) so that I can try to poke out an intruder's eye. That's always stuck in my mind, I do that when I'm alone in a parking lot.

Yes, I had a college professor tell me to do this, and I do when I'm alone as well.

I took a self-defense class in college and they said to do that too!

I always do this and H thinks I'm crazy!  I'll have to tell him I'm not alone!
