Need ideas for an overnight trip please...

Next week is Fall Break so Haley will be out of school.  It totally crept up on me, so we have no plans at all.  I don't want her to just sit around bored all week.  I'd like to do something as a family, but Jim won't be able to take off work for long...so I'm thinking maybe a day trip or an overnight trip somewhere not too far.  Of course, it has to be something that we can manage with Caleb too...so places like Six Flags are out.  We've been to the Chatanooga Aquarium and loved it, but don't want to go back there so soon.  Thought about maybe a zoo, but Haley recently went to the B'ham zoo with her Girl Scout troop.   I love Nashville, but what is there to do there that we would all enjoy?  Any ideas of where we could go?

Re: Need ideas for an overnight trip please...

  • What about going to Atlanta to that huge aquarium.  I hear it is great.
  • Atlanta would be super fun! You could go eat lunch at the Varsity (seriously, that place is huge), then go to the Coca Cola plant and the Aquarium. Dh and I did that the first day of our hm (we left from atl first thing the next morning) and we had a BLAST. It's stroller friendly and a lot of fun for everybody.

  • I was going to suggest Atlanta too.  Lisa lives there now - maybe you guys could all meet up somewhere???

  • Just keep in mind they have a HUGE gas shortage in ATL right now (and most of GA).

I think Nashville will be great.  I'm going there this wknd and there's LOTS to do there but not sure if all of it is baby friendly.

Hmmm, I'll think on this for ya.........

  • Keep in mind that Nashville is also having a gas shortage!  I would have suggested Chatanooga, too.  Of course there's Rock City and Ruby Falls, if Caleb does alright with the hanging-baby carrier.
  • Besides the gas shortage, I think Atlanta is a good idea. The Coca Cola factory is lots of fun, and the underground mall is fun too. I think Haley would enjoy going there, there are lots of unique things at the underground mall. Also you guys could go to Dave and Busters for dinner, it's the Huge restaurant with the Arcade. There are so many things to do there.
  • I definately would suggest ATL (I'm biased cause I grew up outside there) but there is a horrible gas shortage throughout GA and I've heard thru the Carolinas.  My parents and DH's parents live over there and they said its real bad...and DH had trouble going to and coming home from Athens, GA.  My SIL had trouble finding gas in Anniston (sorta the midway point).  I'd say if you can do stuff around here do that.  People are going crazy w/ gas and panicing.  Maybe you could rent a cabin up in Guntersville, or go up to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, short trips and gas wouldn't be a horrible problem.  Come to Oak Mountain State Park! (and visit me at the Wildlife Center!)  lots of nice trails, paddle boats etc.  The leaves are starting to change too.

  • yeah..gas shortage affects the places listed (atl, chattanooga, nashville) as well as charleston.

however, i was also going to suggest atlanta..the aquarium is great and the have a "petting pool" and the coke factory is right next door. or maybe stone mountain. oak mountain is a nice place to spend the day.

i've never been there but you could try the wild animal safari in pine mtn, ga

  • Thanks for all the suggestions!  I was also originally thinking Atl, but my BFF lives there and she is coming here to visit next weekend...so I'd rather wait and go there when we haven't seen eachother in a while.  Also, she said that the Aquarium there is nice, but that she actually liked the Chatanooga one better and that it is really expensive...it would be over $100 for just the 3 of us (assuming Caleb gets in free).

Where is Oak Mtn?  What is there to do there?

  • Well, where ever you decide or whatever you decide, you can check the gas situation here:

     www.gasbuddy.com

It allows you to go to any area, state, etc. and you can see the latest post as to who has gas, who is out, and what the latest price is.

    HTH!!!

  • Birmingham also has the McWane Center which is  a lot of fun.

But, I also love Chattanooga and there is so much to do there other than the aquarium---Children's Museum, Ruby Falls, Incline, Rock City, Choo Choo, etc

  • Bham also has the Children's Theatre which might have something going on.

  • Sorry to do so many posts, but every time I do one, I think of something else.

Montgomery has the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Charlotte's Web begins next weekend, which I think would be SO cute..

    And they have a Zoo

  • Random thoughts to throw out there...

Desoto Caverns has some good kid activities it's in Childersburg so it could be a fun day trip.  http://desotocavernspark.com/

Also, Sylacauga has the Blue Bell plant that has tours and an ice cream parlor while you are up that way.

I have heard Huntsville has a good children's musem (huntsville ladies?)

There is the Natural History Museum in Anniston w/ dinosaurs and a neat kids section.  would be stroller friendly. They also have the Burman museum next door but i have never been there but heard its neat. I think tuesdays or thursdays kids get in free.  I used to take the kids that i would babysit in college on the free days.

    HTH!
