newbie with a few questions

Hi Everyone! My wife and I are relocating to the Quincy area next month from Florida. I was hoping you all could give me a few recommendations. I'm looking to join a yoga or pilates class can anyone suggest a good one for me? Also I'm looking for somewhere reasonably priced to purchase furniture, I've checked out Bernie and Phyl's but I'm still shopping around. I appreciate any suggestions. TIA.

Re: newbie with a few questions

  • Welcome! I am not familiar with Quincy at all so I am sorry I can not be of any help there.  As far as reasonably priced furniture I would vote for Jordans or Macy's.
  • Welcome!  It's amazing how many people are moving here from Florida.

PP mentioned Jordan's for furniture, which is a local chain with a good reputation.  My parents buy from them all the time and have been happy with everything.  Bob's Discount Furniture is at the low end of the price spectrum, but I've found they have some decent stuff.  Our bedroom set is from there and it has held up well for five years.  There's also an Ikea not too far from Quincy if you don't mind hauling and assembling things yourselves.  Our couch is from Macy's and our dining room set is from JC Penney.

  • We have furniture from a whole bunch of different places. So far we've liked everything and it has all held up well. Our couches are from Jordans. Coffee table, tv stand, and bookcase for from Bob's. I'm sometimes embarrassed to say I shop(ped) at Bob's, but I really like the products we bought. Our dining set is from Gariepy Furniture in Leominster, MA. China cabinet is from Macy's (bought online and it looked exactly as it did online). Our bedroom set is from Bernie and Phyls. I think most products from these places are nice, so it really just comes down to what you end up liking the best.

This- Bob's and Ikea are the best you'll get at a lower price point. We have some nice stuff from Jordan's, but it's definitely more expensive than Bob's (which has some good furniture for the price IMO).

There's also always Craig's list! Sometimes you can find some really good stuff on there!

Me too! Haha.  I REALLY did not want to buy from there because of the horrible commercials, but I'm glad I did.

  • We just moved from FL to Boston and we got all our furniture from Bobs and Ikea- we have a ton of problems with Bob's coffee table (we had to have it re-delivered 4 times and its still not perfect) but their customer service is amazing and they are super affordable if that is what you need.  We were much more worried about price and quality at this point in our lives and we've gotten a lot of compliments from our couches
  • Seriously, the number of FL transplants on this board is amazing!  You're the third one who's posted in the last week or two.  Who would've thunk?  I'm more used to people moving in the other direction.

Unfortunately I also don't know the south shore well.  You can try Yelp for info on good yoga/pilates studios.  For furniture, I'm a big Jordan's Furniture fan and you can often get good deals there in the outlet section they recently opened in every store.  The store in Avon also has a ginormous clearance center on the first floor where you can get great bargains--I bought a loveseat so cheap there that when I had to sell it about a year later I actually made money on it.  Definitely compare it to Bob's and Bernie & Phyl's prices--the quality will likely be better.

You should also check out Christmas Tree Shops for things like tables and shelves. They often have great bargains.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

The clearance section has great deals! Bob's in Dedham has a pretty big clearance section as well (I've seen leather couches there for less than $200)

It makes me so happy to hear that my state's equal marriage rights are enabling people to make wonderful lives for themselves with their loved ones. Congrats and welcome again Smile

  • Hi there,

I have not posted in a while (sorry!) but I do live in the Quincy area.  I go to Fitness Unlimited in Milton-a great women's gym-and they do have a variety of yoga/pilates classes.

    Welcome to the area!
