AW your tv

So I think DH and I are the only people who don't have an HD tv...or at least the only people we know....we are planning to buy one.  DH won a $250 gift card at work and other $100 one.  Wohoo!  We were going to wait until black Friday, but we will be OOT and I hate to have to put one in the car and drive back with it, so we may go this weekend.  Our budget is $500 and below.  We don't have a preference with plasma or LCD, but plasma was recommended to us.  Anyone want to AW their TV?

Re: AW your tv

  • We don't have one either, but will also be in the market for one very soon. I'm interested to see what people say.
  • Aww thats awesome!

BJ's is having decent sales on their tvs over black friday. . .

Plasma tvs are said to be easier to 'burn in' meaning if you leave it on too long, the image will stay? (This is just what I've heard) But Colors are said to be better on the Plasma

The LCD. . just be careful about what you're buying and make sure to ask about the quality.

IMO. .Id just go to your local store selling the TVs youre interested in and just watch them for a little bit and see what picture you like best.

Another interesting thing I've recently heard about Black Friday TVs / Outlet mall TVs ( do they have those?)  Apparently some tv's (like clothing) are made specifically for these purposes and while they are said to be the same tv and look exactly the same. . some of the functions aren't (again, just something I've heard recently)

Anyways. . thats soooo awesome about the winning of the GC's. We have an LCD and I like it. It's in our living room and theres a HUGE difference from it when compared to the older tv that is upstairs.

  • I don't really know too much about TV's, but I know DH says Samsung is the best one to buy. That's what we have and most of our friends have.

    Huh?

  • We have a Samsung and a Vizio. Both are nice, but the Samsung has a better picture quality.
  • We have a LG LCD tv. DH preferred the LCD over the plasma, but I'm not sure why. It's 1080p (which I think means its full HD?) We have had it for 3ish years and haven't had any trouble. I've always had good luck with LG products.

We bought it at Best Buy, the sales associate there knew a lot about TVs and really helped us figure out why one 47" tv was $800, and the other is $1400.

  • We have a Vizio LCD tv, and my mom has an LG LCD for about 3 years now.  Plasma, yes, is easier to "burn into," and they also don't last as long as LCD tvs.  1080p is the best right now.  My dad is an electronics guru (he fixes computers and use to be a TV repair man), and he has an LCD tv.  I tend to trust his opinion when it comes to electronics.
  • We just got one for the bedroom.  Its a Vizio LED - DH said the LED is the best to hang on the wall.  He also cautions away from Plasma and says LCD's are the best.  I have to say the Vizio is AWESOME.  We have heard nothing but good things about them and now owning one we love it.

If you want to wait for Black Friday - can you use the gift card online and just pick it up in the store when you get back?  DH wants to get one for the living room and I am trying to get him to wait until the ads come out first to make sure we get the best price.  And yes this one will also be a Vizio.

  • We have an LG TV, and we love it.  It is an LCD and 1080, too.  High quality, great picture.
  • We don't have an HD TV either.  I think if/when we buy one, it will be a Vizio.  CA passed a new ordinance that says their HD TVs have to become energy efficient by a certain new percentage and Vizio was the only company that publicly said "not a problem."  We're trying to wait until the new generation of more energy efficient TVs.

Very cool that your DH won those great GCs!  Hope you find something you like.

  • We just got one when we moved into the new house.....

Its a 46in Samsung plasma TV.  After looking at the picture quality, we decided that we could get just as much TV for a better price by getting plasma instead of LCD/LED

    I think its this one:

We looked at Sears, HH Gregg, and Best Buy.  Sears had the best price, but the TV had to be ordered (it was not in stock), so we took the price sheet to HHGregg and they matched it and took 10% off!  I think we ended up paying just a little over $400 by the time it was all said and done.

  • Last year DH bought me a Panasonic 48" plasma.  It's better for us because we play video games and the color is much better.  we do experience some burn in but only when we are ding bats and forget to turn the tv off when it's paused haha.  the burn in goes away though so it's not a big deal.  We just got an lcd (three days ago) at best buy.  We got a 30" off brand from Best Buy....I can't remember what it is.  We love them both....you can definitely a picture difference but I think they're both awesome!
  • Also, when shopping for your TV, consider the return policy of the business from which you buy it.  Best buy has a HORRIBLE policy, imo as they charge a "restocking" fee for anything you want to return--or exchange.  Not sure if the other stores have a similar policy, so you may want to look into it.
  • I have a Sony LCD, Samsung Plasma, and LG LCD. The LG kicks the crap out of all the other TV's I have. My Sony is going on 5 years old and probably will replace it in year or so with another LG.

Do you plan on getting HD service through your cable or satellite provider? If not you will not receive even close to the full effects of having a HD TV. There is a huge difference. Also make sure buy the high def cables that go with it.

  • Ops! Logged in under the wrong email! It has been over a year!
  • We have a Samsung LCD and LOVE IT!!!  The tv NEVER gets hot...it's great!  I heard the plasma's aren't the best...something about how images can be burned in the screen (if you leave it on pause too long or something or play a lot of video games).  We bought from Best Buy and were able to haggle with them a little (thanks to my dad lol).  The HD quality is incredible btw...I now record all of my shows that I'm able to in HD.
