Question: Favorite Holiday Tradition
Question: What is your favorite holiday tradition that you will continue for your family?
Re: Question: Favorite Holiday Tradition
We hide a pickle ornament on our Christmas tree every year (well my mom did)...and on Christmas, all the kids (well us grownups now) search for it hidden on the Christmas tree...whoever finds it first gets a special prize (just something small and fun..)
I look forward to being able to do this with my children

Christmas is my favorite. My family always gathers on Christmas Eve at grandpa's house (grandma died in 2004). Aunts, uncles, cousins, the whole shebang. We used to have a meal, but at some point it became a potluck and we just eat all day and open presents sometime in the evening. The adults draw names and everyone is supposed to buy for just the person whose name they've drawn, but sometimes other gifts are exchanged as well.
I'm excited that Darren finally gets to be apart of this tradition. Last year was the first time he was able to actually go with me - he always had to work in the years before - but now he's part ofthe family and gets to draw names with the rest of us.

ever since i have been a kid, we would go to my aunt's house - now a 3 hour drive to long island for christmas eve. staying w/ italian traditions - she does the 7 fish corses.. not that i'm into fish, but i always enjoy baked clams, lobster sauce, and her chicken parm (yup, chicken for me and the kids who dont eat fish).. it is a 5 hour marathon eating session and i look forward to it every year.
the best was the first year DH (lol, i actually typed FI and then erased it) was introduced to it he was amazed at the amount of time we spent eating and the never ending courses. now he looks forward to it too!
my bio - updated with pics!!
We always opened a present the night before after we got home from church. It was usually a new ornament for the tree. I want to keep doing that with my family.
And my whole extended family always has Christmas lunch at my aunt and uncle's house. Last year we didn't go because DH was on call and had to stay in the city. I'm definitely looking forward to it this year!!!
We really didn't have many traditions at my Mom's except that we would go visiting to different family members on christmas day.
DH & I hope to make our own traditions together. This Christmas I'm going to make monkey bread for breakfast and I hope to do it every year from now on!
My favorite tradition growing up was the elves. Instead of having stockings with little treats and presents, my mom would buy little things, and then throughout the month of December the elves would leave us a little treat now and then on our bed. She would say something like "Ooh, I think I hear something upstairs. Did you guys hear that?" and we'd all run up and find something on our beds. It was so exciting, and made the whole beginning of the month so much fun. In college my best friend and I used to do it for each other with candy. And now H and I do it for each other. I can't wait to do it for our kids!
I also love Christmas Eve. Before she passed away, my mom always hosted. My brothers and sisters, and my aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents would always come spend the evening with us. We'd have lots of appetizers, dips, soup and roast beef sandwiches. It was fabulous. H and I started hosting it last year for his brother and sister and their families, and we're excited to do it again this year.
My family does this, too! I just bought DH and I a pickle ornament last weekend! I can't wait to decorate the tree and put the pickle on it. I guess I should mention that I'm 100% German heritage, so this tradition is a family-wide thing. DH thought it was kind of weird the first year we dated, but now he loves it!
