Re: OStateKris - Throwdown!
Once upon a time on a hot September day.... (very long) My MIL called me the day before the taping to invite me because FIL could not go. They invited the audience members at the very last minute, so they couldn't spread the word to the media. MIL couldn't even tell me it was a Throwdown until we were in the car on the way there the morning of (but I had already guessed it was).
We get to PW's lodge at about 11:15 am. We signed confidentiality agreements and were told no cameras or cell phones allowed
. We had to hang outside for about an hour and a half while the crew was setting up lighting and sound inside.
They open the doors to let us in and we rush to be as close to the action as possible. PW was not in the kitchen at this point. The camera crew gets footage of the audience clapping, oohing and ahhing, etc. before she comes in. Then PW comes into the kitchen, everyone applauds and she announces that she's doing a cooking show for the Food Network on her Thanksgiving meal. Apparently at this point most of the audience did not know that it was a Throwdown.
So, she cooks for a while and Bobby Flay walks in and announces it's a Throwdown. We stood there for HOURS watching them. PW and BF did interact with the audience some. Oh, and you know when PW was talking about not being able to get her gravy right? It took FOREVER! You could tell BF was getting quite irritated, we even heard him say somthing to the effect of "somebody get over there and help her with the damn gravy so we can get this over with".
Finally, at about 5:00 we got to eat. We just kind of stood around eating while the camera crew interviewed people about the food. They did interview me, but I didn't make the cut to the show. Probably because I was starving and all I could say was "these mashed potatoes are delicious" (I could have eated dog food at that point). I told MIL if they showed that on tv I would die.
After we ate, the audience members had to go outside while they prepared for the judging segment. We waited for about an hour, then all came back inside and they set us up around the judging area. We had no idea Trisha Yearwood would be there until she came up behind where we were standing to get through the crowd. At the end of the judging MIL ran and got our PW cookbooks and got them over to have Trisha sign them.
When it was over we didn't even get to talk with BF or anyone. I did get Miriam (one of BF's assistants) autograph (not sure why). We all had to wait outside in one area while they were interviewing Trisha Yearwood on the other side of the house (outside). We were so ready to go at this point, so MIL had PW's FIL sneek us out and take us to our car.
And, PW's kids are really cute. They were so excited to see Trisha Yearwood, and were all asking for her autograph. Her youngest boy kept saying "my mom's gonna win" to eveyone. And, while she was cooking he asked his dad "can I go give momma a hug". So sweet.
It was an exciting, but exhausting day. BF's cranberry sauce was AMAZING, I could eat it everyday with a spoon. And the bread pudding, mmmm. I'm not a bread pudding fan usually, but it was so yummy. PW's mashed potatoes are better than any I've ever had, I'm making them for my own Thanksgiving.
