have we discussed

the new TSA policies and their scanners? Which would you rather do? What about those of you with children? We may be flying with the kids in May and I feel rather uncomfortable about the whole thing.

Edited because the Nest posted too soon. Jerkfaces.

Re: have we discussed

  • I don't think we've discussed them here, but I've seen them debated on just about every other board.

I personally have no problem with someone seeing my "naked" and would choose that instantly over the molestation pat down.

  • If you're pregnant, do you automatically get the pat down?  Because no thank you.

  • On my way home from Rob's Island, I got a naked radiation scan AND groped.  I know you're all jealous.

I think I'd go in whatever line was shortest.  I pity anyone who has to see me naked (even if it is blurry) or has to check my fat rolls.

  • I'd definitely take the photos.  However, in Chicago in May, I accidentally got into the scanner line. I got scanned and then patted down.  Frustratingly slow.

  • When I flew while pregnant with Evie they had a machine in SF. I asked the TSA agent about safety for pregnant women, and her response was, "Well, it's probably okay. I don't really know." So I opted out and was sent through the metal detector instead.

I'm not sure what the official TSA stance is on pregnant woman in the new scanners, but the letter from UCSF faculty that's been going around suggests that it's not the best idea. If the TSA doesn't recommend it, I don't know if that means all pregnant ladies will automatically be groped. It seems pretty shiitty to not have another option for an entire class of people.

I wonder how common the double invasion is?

  • Well that's just awesome.  Or maybe I can consider it a free ultrasound!

Did you see this article? http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfmoms/detail?entry_id=77140&tsp=1

I can't believe little kids are getting pat down.  That just seems wrong in so many ways.

  • if I was pregnant, I would opt for the groping I guess.  Although in small doses it is probably like eating lunchmeat or soft serve ice cream, radiation screams DANGERWILLROBINSONFETUS to me.

The problem is that we don't really know the long term effects on the population as a whole with the scanning machines.

I don't mind being scanned or having people see naked (blurry) pics of me, but it's the exposure to radiation that concerns me.  THough I probably need to do more research to see if it's a "I'm microwaving my instant oatmeal" type of radiation or "glowing green can of nuclear waste" type of radiation.

I don't like groping of any kind.  I am very "personal space stop touching me I don't like it."

    image
  • I'm so pissed about this, I really can't articulate it.

I choose groping in public because I want it illustrated how ridiculous the entire thing is.  Honestly I could care less about someone seeing me naked and I'm not worried about radiation.  But no one needs to either stick their hands inside my pants or view my lady bits when I haven't done anything wrong.

For kids, I honestly don't know.  Under 12 are exempt right?

  • BTW, here's the letter I mentioned: http://www.scribd.com/doc/35498347/UCSF-letter-to-Holdren-concerning-health-risks-of-full-body-scanner-TSA-screenings-4-6-2010

The unknown long-term effects of the radiation bother me, and maybe this makes me an overly paranoid weirdo mom, but the idea of letting someone take a naked picture of my kids really bothers me. But the idea of letting someone grope my kids also really bothers me. I'm bothered all around. If we end up all flying in May, and nothing has changed, I'm not sure what to do.

  • If the airport doesn't have the scanner, do you automatically get the groping now?  I thought you only got the pat down if you opted out of the scan but that doesn't really seem to be the case.

I am flying next week and really curious to see what happens, the airport does not have a scanner.

  • I read a couple links that discussed the radiation.  Apparently it's less than what you'd be subjected to on the actual flight.

I did think the fact they needed to pat me down after sending me through their fancy high tech scanner was a little weird.  Like, what's the point of the scanner if you still have to feel me up because I'm wearing underwire and have a bedazzled shirt on?  Those things seem commonplace enough that you'd think the scanner should be able to identify them without the need for a pat down.

As far as I've read, no they're not.

I hate both of these options, and it drives me nuts that people are saying that they're fine with either, and we should just suck it up if we want to fly safely.

I really hope that they amend this policy before I have to fly again, because I really don't know what I'll do.

And it's not just pregnant women who can't go through the scanners, and would be forced to deal with a groping. It's also anyone with any type of implanted medical device.

  • I thought John Pistole (Admin of TSA) said on the Today Show that kids under 12 would not have to go through the "enhanced pat down" if their parents didn't want them to go through the scanners.  So if you opt out of the scanners, I don't know what they will do, but it's not the hands in pants, hands on chest, hands on butt stuff they're doing to adults.

  • Eh, I don't care either way.  I like being felt up.  I also don't mind if they see me naked.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I think in airport screening, profiling is a must.  I'm not talking, 'hey, that guy has brown skin, search him".  I'm talking more about having the TSA workers make eye contact with the person as they check id, ask some casual questions, make note of nervous behavior, inability to answer simple questions, one-way tickets, etc.  Perhaps I'm naive, but I think do-badders are most likely not great actors and will act shifty when confronted in a non-threatening way.

  • November, when I flew in from Amsterdam, their equivalent of the TSA I guess, did something similar.  But it was for every passenger.  Every single person talked to an agent for a few minutes about what they were doing in the Netherlands, where they were going, where they were from, did they pack their own bag, was it always in their possession, etc.  I guarantee those agents were trained to watch us and see if we were shifty and nervous.

I think that would be so much more effective than a fukking groping of a 3 year old.  This is security theater, not security.

They do profiling in Israel. And you get through to your gate in under 25 minutes. And if Israelis don't think they need to grope you and take naked pictures of you to get on a plane, I think they've probably got something figured out.

  • I would prefer the scanners but I'm one of those people who is not up in arms about it.  Even though we're always just reacting to the last threat (No boxcutters!  Take your shoes off!) I like to feel that TSA is doing what they can to make flying safe

  • I wonder if you moaned and pretended to really enjoy the pat down if you'd get in trouble?  Probably.

  • I've been patted down three times, once (with a one way ticket) extensively.  Even when the woman was feeling my bra underwire, I never felt "groped." I think we should stop using that term.  It seems unnecessarily inflammatory to me.

Agreed.  I've been patted down a few times, and each time the agent was very professional, telling me what she was going to do before she did it, and doing it very mechanically.

  • I don't think we can call it a pat down anymore when they're now going inside the waistband of your pants.  I don't know what to call it, other than an unreasonable search.

Exactly.  I think there are better ways to ensure safety, but in the meantime, I'll gladly accept whatever measures they want to enforce because anything is better than nothing.

  • I'm kind of shocked that these are or will soon be our only two options and some people are totally fine with it.

And the pat down procedures have changed and they now touch genitals. Not okay.

  • I don't know enough about the scanners to feel 100% comfortable. I normally have no issues with things like this but the baby gives me some concern. I would probably go for a pat down if I was going to fly anytime soon. I guarantee that if I felt the pat down had turned into actual groping there would be something said.
  • Someone touching my labia and squeezing my breasts sounds like groping. And if I was going to hide something, I'd put it in one of my cavities, not just stick it in my underwear or under my boobs. It's an unneccessary invasion of privacy.

    image

  • I don't see how what they do in Israel would be feasible in the US, given the number of airports we have here.
  • Inside the pants? Really?

The original article is from prison planet, so not a paragon of journalism, but a few people in the post relate that yes, they have had hands in their pants during these "patdowns."

And if you're wearing a dress or a skirt, you might be asked to take it off and be given a freaking towel. http://aclum.org/tsa/kyo_airport.php

  • What the US is doing for airport security isn't working. Nothing is consistent and the TSA employees are a joke. Israel even thinks these new "procedures" are ridiculous.

I don't think either option for myself and hellz to the no for Ben. He won't be going in a scanner and no way is someone going to be touching his baby bits. F**k that noise. Do they put their hands down his diaper?

I read that one guy said he got made fun of because the TSA employees could see that he had a small penis (in his scanner picture). The pictures are not blurry...they are clear.
