vacuum recommendations

Ok, I know it's been asked before. However, since everyone feels the need to ask at least twice a day for carpet steam cleaner recommendations, I figure I can ask for a vacuum recommendation.

We have a dyson that finally lost suction. There really is a filter that needs to be replaced, and it costs more than I want to pay to screw with it.

What kind of vacuum should we get? I want something powerful.

Re: vacuum recommendations

  • I just got the Dyson DC25 ball upright that has a washable HEPA filter. Instructions suggest washing every 3 months. Is there another filter in the vacuum in addition to HEPA?

BTW, love the Dyson so far and works much better than the Hoover and Electrolux vacs we have.

  • Bissel! I have the cheapest one and it pulls HANDFULLS of dust and cat hair from my carpet.  I love that vacuum!  They seem to be cheapest at WM but check around.    I know it does seem everyday! LOL!

There are two filters in the Dyson. There is the foam kind that you remove and wash out in the sink. I wash it every other time I dump the dust bin.

The other filter, is the HEPA filter. It's plastic, and it's underneath the dust bin. It cannot be washed, and the instructions say not to mess with it. It's the part that's expensive to replace.

The local vacuum shop said it would cost $150 to replace the HEPA filter, the roller brush and the belt. They said any other vacuum would probably cost $25 to maintain, but since it's a Dyson, it costs more. It's just the brand recognition. Since they have excellent marketing, everything costs more.

Don't I feel like a sucker. I guess Dyson got sued for saying it's vacuums never lost suction, because they do. You do have to replace parts. It's not as wonderful as they wanted me to believe.

Anyway, I want another brand. I want it to be strong and powerful. I also prefer that it have a crevice tool. Past that, I could care less.

There is a super cheap Bissell at WM. I am skeptical of vacuums that cheap, but if you say it works, I might go check it out. The one I see on the website is less than $40, and even if something like that breaks, I wouldn't feel too bad about it.

  • I have the $80. one.  (I think it's little more now)  Bissel is a really old company.  They claim to have come out with the firstvaccuums.  Bissel is also sold at Department stores.  WM just happens to carry them.
  • I have an Oreck XL and I love it.  It's so light and easy to maneuver, but really powerful too.  It also came with a small hand-vac that is the bomb.  I will say that I don't have pets, so I can't honestly say how it is with pet hair.

  • I have the Simplicity  upright vacuum. LOVE it!  It's very light and easy to push.  Cleans well .Not very expensive either. Good Luck!

Same thing just happened to us. About a year ago, I noticed our now 5 yr old Dyson DC07 wasn't picking up as well has it had before. I finally brought it to the local repair shop and they recommended a $90 service (service would cost less if I got it done more often they say), then they found that the clutch assembly needed to be replaced. Apparently the belts on the Dyson must be replaced as an assembly, $65.

DH did not want to pay that much more for something that never really has been great on hard floors, so we asked what they recommend to replace it with. We tried the Simplicity Sport out this week and like it - canister you carry with a strap. They'll credit the $90 we already paid on the Dyson so we're paying the balance of $100 to purchase the Simplicity Sport. They'd give us an extra $100 off a Simplicity Freedom upright and I'm still deciding if we need to spend the extra $350-500 for a 2nd vacuum or just borrow my grandparents Simplicity Freedom upright when we need it.

  • Jenni, it's good to hear that it's not just our local vacuum shop that's quoting expensive replacement parts for Dysons.

Ours recommended a Riccar, which I hadn't heard of before. They said they have really durable parts and they are cheap and easy to replace. The vacuums themselves are expensive, and if no one but that one shop carries them, I'm not buying it.

I am hoping for a name that's common. I will go check out Orecks today too. Dh likes them, but I want to know about the hand held vac before I get too excited about those. Most Orecks don't have crevice tools, and we have a lot of dust that accumulates along our base boards.

Our carpet is so nasty. I can't wait to clean it up. We are definitely going shopping today. I told DH that we should buy extra bags and belts for whatever we get right away and not wait until we need them. That way, we know how much they cost and we know we have access to them.

  • I have a Dyson that i have had for 4 yrs now. I have not had any problems with it. They have a 5 yr warranty on them, so what I figured is that if it only lasted 5yrs it is totally worth it. I look at it this way. I was spending $80 plus a year on new vacs, parts or filters/bags. So really I was going to spend about the same if the Dyson lasted at least that long (which it has) but I haven't had to go through the trouble of spending the time and hassle to research and look for reviews and price shop and the like. That to me is worth it over everything.
