Need computer virus help!

Not sure if anyone here can help me, but I need help.

Twice now, people in my email addresses have received emails with attachments that had a virus.  I haven't sent any emails in weeks.

I have norton anti virus, have done a virus scan and nothing shows up.  I have cleaned my computer up and deleted stuff.

What do I do?????  I do not know LOTS when it comes to computers.  How do I get rid of this virus that I must have but not showing up when I do a virus scan?

Thank you so much in advance for any help you can give me.

Re: Need computer virus help!

  • What email do you use? If you use Yahoo, gmail, hotmail, etc. the problem is not on your computer. Someone has gotten ahold of your email password and is logging into your email. If that's the case, usually a simple change of password will fix the problem.

If you use Outlook, Thunderbird, or another computer based email client, then the problem might be with your computer after all. In addition to a virus scan, you should download an anti-spyware program.

  • Thank you for responding.

    It is a yahoo account.

Do you think this would be someone I know?

  • No, it's probably not someone you know.

I would recommend trying another scan with different software to confirm nothing is present.  Here are some options:

  • Not liekly someone you know.

Probably you accidentally entered your password onto a fake login page used to steal your password. Whenever logging into any sites that are password protected, always go to the page directly yourself...i.e type in yahoo.com or paypal.com or facebook.com and enter the login info yourself...never click on a link in an email or on a website then log in. If you do click a link, look at your web address bar and make sure it actually says yahoo.com or paypal.com or whatever and not some other address or a variation, like use-yahoo.com or something along those lines. The tricksters are clever but it's easy to spot most traps if you know what to look for.

Just be glad it wasn't your banking password or anything super important that was stolen! Changing your password usually does the trick. Make sure you use a strong password, not "password" or "123456" or anything like that.
