Unusual holiday traditions?

Does your family celebrate the holidays with any funny or offbeat traditions?

Re: Unusual holiday traditions?

  • My husband is from South Africa and so is his mom, his dad is from Czech Republic. They do some weird stuff, I cant really think right now, his mom makes a trifle. They always have a "Christmas boy and girl" which could be an old or young person. They make weird food. The funny thing is, my MIL grew up in Cape Town so their Christmas was always summertime and they would go to the beach and stuff.

My mom and I always have mexican food and margaritas on Christmas Eve.

  • We eat Russell Stover marshmallow Santas for breakfast.  I have had one every year since I was like, 2.
  • My DH's family has a leg wrestling competition on Christmas eve at their family party. People are matched up based on height, weight, etc. There's even a trophy. The winner holds on to the trophy until the next year, when it's handed down to the next champion.

I'm not even a little bit kidding. My first year spending the holidays with his family thinking it was totally weird, but now I think it's a lot of fun!

  • When I was in high school and we stopped having extended family get togethers on Christmas Eve, my mom started a tradition of pizza and cheesecake, followed by opening one gift.  My first year working (when I was 18), I added shrimp cocktail as a surprise for my dad (he loves seafood-mom hates it).  I got my brother hooked and they still do it, even though I haven't been home for Christmas since 07.
