Self cleaning oven

I have my first ever self cleaning oven and I just set it, can anyone tell me how long it takes? I am going out of town this afternoon and my DH wont be back until late evening. Can I leave it running while I'm not home? Im just worried about setting off the smoke dectectors or something with no one home.

TIA

Re: Self cleaning oven

  • You definitely shouldn't leave that running in an empty house. The self-cleaning feature uses very high temperatures and (like Crash said) gives off a lot of fumes. You'll definitely need to open a few windows.

I've never ran my self-cleaner, but I saw in the manual that it takes 4 hours... but my stove is fairly old. Do you still have the manual to your stove or can you look it up online? It should say how long it takes to run in there.

  • Have you looked in the book the oven came with? It talks about that in there.  Or try to look it up online.
  • Diddo what PP said...don't leave alone, takes 4 to 5 hours and creates smelly/unpleasant fumes so most certainly open a few windows.

I don't do it very often because I put foil down in the bottom of my oven but about once a year some kind of juice works it's way to the bare bottom and the self cleaning function is super easy compared to the smell of cleaning products and hard scrubbing.
