Tumbling Composter tips?

My brother made me an awesome tumbling composter, but nothing seems to be actually composting.  Anyone have any great tips or resources?

Re: Tumbling Composter tips?

  • Even in a tumbling composter, which works faster than an upright bin-style composter, it's going to take several months to make compost.  We get finished compost out of our upright bin in 6-9 months.  Add 50% greens and 50% browns.  Greens are nitrogen-rich materials like kitchen scraps and grass clippings.  Browns are carbon-rich material like dried leaves, newspaper, or shredded cardboard.  You can Google for other types of greens and browns.  Keep the contents moist, like a damp sponge, and put the composter in a sunny corner of your yard.  Turn with every addition.  And you should have finished compost in a couple months.  It's "finished" when you can no longer see any individual pieces, just crumbly sweet-smelling dirt.

  • What kind did you get?

I want one of the sphere ones because they look cool, but I've read that the door can get stuck and hard to open.
