Depressed around Holidays!
Just curious how many people deal with depression around the holidays!
I hate to admit it, but I do not like Christmas - at all. I had something happen many years ago on Christmas Eve that I just can not let go of, and ever since then....I do not like Christmas. I get very depressed. Yes, I am on something for it, but it still doesn't help around this time of year.
Re: Depressed around Holidays!
Stop feeling depressed. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself do something for someone else. Volunteer and see that even though something bad happened to you bad things happen to other people and I think that may help you feel better.
I didn't mean that to sound harsh I really want everyone to enjoy the holidays so that is my advice to help you.
9 years ago my mom died Dec 28th after being in a coma at home with hospice (ovarian cancer), my dad died early January a year later, and 5 years ago my Gram had a major stroke Christmas night and died a few days later.
I would have rather just avoided the holidays completely (and did for a few years before we were married) but DH is crazy about Christmas and we host Christmas day for both sides of our family (about 25 people).
I don't know if you have children or not but this year my DD will be 19 months old for Christmas and I have a c-section planned for Dec 14th for DD #2 and it has made all the difference in the world. The holidays are no longer about me and my sadness. DD gets so excited when she sees Christmas trees lit up and I cannot wait to see her open her presents.
What about thinking about a good Christmas that you had one year? That Christmas eve was only ONE time, it doesn't happen ever year of your life. Try replacing this memory with a great one from a Christmas past.
i'm sorry to hear this. lots of people are depressed around the holidays for one reason or another so you are definitely not alone.
is there something you like about the holidays? even it is a bit off-beat like...watching people go crazy at black friday sales?....certain holiday foods that are your fav.....just anything you could focus on.
i would suggest starting your own holiday tradition that you can look forward to every year instead of dreading whatever brings up the bad memories. if you like hosting parties maybe you could do a "holiday" party but with a different theme.... maybe take a vacation over christmas.
hope this helps and lots of wishes for the strength you need to get through this year's holiday season.
I understand what you mean. My mom had a heart attack at Thanksgiving, was in the hospital - had a triple bypass at Christmas, and died at New Years - so I can relate.
The one thing is that its GREAT you're getting help for your depression related to your particular incident, just remember - you dont have to force yourself to enjoy it.
If you dont want to go nuts during the holiday, dont - maybe try doing something nice for yourself and make THAT a yearly tradition.
Hey Mrs. D - I know what it's like to be deeply depressed - in fact I just got put on meds after about 10 years of hell, and I'm slowly getting better. So I know you can't just peel yourself off the couch like some people advise.
One thing about the holidays is that the days are shorter, and that affects lots of people - even the ones who aren't already having problems. So allow yourself that knowledge - it's not just you.
I think what you should do is come up with a new holiday tradition. Is there a way you can attend some sort of event, or go out for a movie, or make some special holiday food, or go out to a favorite restaurant? I find that yearly traditions make looking forward to the holidays that much better. Do what you can to involve as many family and friends. There's nothing better to beat the sadness than quality time with loved ones.
